ആന്റണിയും സോണിയയും തമ്മില്‍ ഒരേഒരു ഫോണ്‍ കോള്‍, വേണുഗോപാല്‍ വീണു, സതീശന്‍ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിയായി

ന്യൂഡല്‍ഹി : കേരളത്തിലെ കോണ്‍ഗ്രസിലെ ആശയക്കുഴപ്പങ്ങള്‍ പരിഹരിച്ച് വി ഡി സതീശനെ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി പദത്തിലെത്തിച്ചത് മുതിര്‍ന്ന നേതാക്കളായ സോണിയാ ഗാന്ധിയുടെയും എ കെ ആന്റണിയുടെയും ഇടപെടലെന്നു റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട്.

നിയമസഭാ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ് ഫലം വന്ന് 10 ദിവസങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ശേഷമാണ് മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിയെ കണ്ടെത്താനായത്. പ്രശ്‌നപരിഹാരത്തിന് സോണിയ ഫോണില്‍ വിളിച്ചത് കേരളത്തില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള തന്റെ ഏറ്റവും വിശ്വസ്തനായ എ.കെ. ആന്റണിയെ ആയിരുന്നു.

മൂന്ന് മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി സ്ഥാനാര്‍ത്ഥികളും വിട്ടുവീഴ്ചയ്ക്ക് തയ്യാറാകാതെ വന്നതോടെയാണ് സോണിയാ ഗാന്ധി രംഗത്തിറങ്ങിയത്. നിരീക്ഷകരായ അജയ് മാക്കനും മുകുള്‍ വാസ്‌നിക്കും എംഎല്‍എമാരുമായി സംസാരിച്ചിരുന്നു. തുടര്‍ന്ന് എംഎല്‍എമാരെയും മറ്റ് നേതാക്കളെയും ഡല്‍ഹിയിലേക്ക് വിളിപ്പിച്ച് രാഹുല്‍ ഗാന്ധി അഭിപ്രായം തേടി. എല്ലാവരെയും കേട്ട ശേഷം കോണ്‍ഗ്രസ് അധ്യക്ഷന്‍ മല്ലികാര്‍ജുന്‍ ഖാര്‍ഗെയുമായി കൂടിക്കാഴ്ച നടത്തിയ രാഹുല്‍ പക്ഷേ, അന്തിമ തീരുമാനം നീട്ടിവച്ചു.

ഈ സാഹചര്യത്തിലാണ് 'ഇന്ത്യ' സഖ്യത്തിന്റെ അധ്യക്ഷ കൂടിയായ സോണിയാ ഗാന്ധി സെലക്ഷന്‍ പ്രക്രിയയില്‍ പങ്കാളിയായത്. ആന്റണിയുമായി സോണിയ നടത്തിയ ഫോണ്‍ കോളാണ് കേരളത്തിന്റെ അടുത്ത മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി ആരാകണമെന്ന് നിശ്ചയിച്ചത്.

കേരളത്തിന്റെ മൂന്ന് തവണ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിയായിരുന്ന ആന്റണി 2001-ലാണ് അവസാനമായി അധികാരമേറ്റത്. എന്നാല്‍ 2004-ലെ ലോക്സഭാ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പില്‍ യുഡിഎഫിനുണ്ടായ തിരിച്ചടിയുടെ ധാര്‍മ്മിക ഉത്തരവാദിത്തം ഏറ്റെടുത്ത് അദ്ദേഹം രാജി വച്ചു. തുടര്‍ന്ന് ഉമ്മന്‍ ചാണ്ടി മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിയായി, ആന്റണി കേന്ദ്ര മന്ത്രിയായി ഡല്‍ഹിയിലേക്ക് മാറി. സോണിയാ ഗാന്ധിയുമായുള്ള അടുപ്പത്തിനും ലാളിത്യത്തിനും പേരുകേട്ട നേതാവാണ് അദ്ദേഹം. 'എപ്പോഴും പോക്കറ്റില്‍ രാജി കത്തുമായി നടക്കുന്ന നേതാവ്' എന്നാണ് ആന്റണി ഡല്‍ഹി വൃത്തങ്ങളില്‍ അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്.

കെ.സി. വേണുഗോപാലിനെ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിയാക്കിയാല്‍ ഉണ്ടാകാവുന്ന പ്രായോഗിക ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുകളെക്കുറിച്ച് ആന്റണി സോണിയ ഗാന്ധിക്ക് മുന്നറിയിപ്പ് നല്‍കി. വേണുഗോപാല്‍ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിയായാല്‍ ഒരു എംഎല്‍എ സീറ്റ് ഒഴിയേണ്ടി വരും. കൂടാതെ നിലവില്‍ എംപി ആയതിനാല്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പാര്‍ലമെന്റ് മണ്ഡലത്തിലും ഉപതിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ് വേണ്ടിവരും. പൊതുതിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ് കഴിഞ്ഞ സാഹചര്യത്തില്‍ ഇത്തരമൊരു റിസ്‌ക് എടുക്കുന്നത് ഉചിതമല്ലെന്ന് ആന്റണി ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടി. വേണുഗോപാല്‍ ഉപതിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പില്‍ മത്സരിച്ചാല്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ തോല്‍പ്പിക്കാന്‍ പാര്‍ട്ടിയിലെ തന്നെ എതിര്‍പക്ഷങ്ങള്‍ ഒന്നിക്കാനുള്ള സാദ്ധ്യതയും സോണിയയെ ആന്റണി ഓര്‍മിപ്പിച്ചു.

വോട്ടര്‍മാര്‍ വി.ഡി. സതീശനെയാണ് ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നതെന്നും മുന്നണിയിലെ മറ്റ് കക്ഷികള്‍ക്ക് അദ്ദേഹത്തോടാണ് താല്‍പ്പര്യമെന്നും ആന്റണി പറഞ്ഞു. ഡല്‍ഹിയില്‍ നിന്നൊരാളെ അടിച്ചേല്‍പ്പിക്കരുത് എന്നായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പക്ഷം.

ആന്റണിയുടെ ഈ ഉപദേശം സോണിയ ഗാന്ധിയുടെ തീരുമാനം മാറ്റിമറിച്ചു. സോണിയയ്ക്കു മനസ്സുകൊണ്ട് താത്പര്യം രമേശ് ചെന്നിത്തലയോട് ആയിരുന്നു എന്നാണ് അറിയുന്നത്. വേണുഗോപാല്‍ ഇപ്പോള്‍ സോണിയയുടെയും രാഹുലിന്റെയും വേണ്ടപ്പെട്ടയാളാണെങ്കിലും രമേശുമായി സോണിയയ്ക്കു നേരത്തേ തന്നെ നല്ല സൗഹൃദമുണ്ട്.

മാത്രമല്ല, കേരളത്തിലെ ജനവികാരം സതീശന് അനുകൂലമായി നില്‌ക്കെ, അതു മുഖവിലയ്‌ക്കെടുക്കെടുക്കാതിരുന്നാല്‍ വയനാട് എംപിയായ പ്രിയങ്കാ ഗാന്ധിക്ക് അതു ഭാവിയില്‍ ദോഷം ചെയ്യുമെന്നും കോണ്‍ഗ്രസ് നേതൃത്വം കണക്കുകൂട്ടി. 

തുടര്‍ന്ന് രാഹുല്‍ ഗാന്ധിയും പ്രിയങ്കാ ഗാന്ധിയും കെ.സി. വേണുഗോപാലിനോട് ഡല്‍ഹിയില്‍ തുടരാന്‍ ആവശ്യപ്പെടുകയും വി.ഡി. സതീശനെ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിയായി നിശ്ചയിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.

പൂച്ചെണ്ടുകള്‍ക്കു പിന്നാലെ കല്ലേറും വരും, നിയുക്ത മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിയെ ഓര്‍മിപ്പിച്ച് എ കെ ആന്റണി

The decision was reached ten days after the Assembly election results were announced. To find a solution to the deadlock, Sonia Gandhi reached out to her most trusted ally from Kerala, A.K. Antony.

Sonia Gandhi stepped in after three potential Chief Ministerial candidates refused to budge. Observers Ajay Maken and Mukul Wasnik had previously held discussions with the MLAs. Subsequently, Rahul Gandhi summoned the MLAs and other leaders to Delhi to seek their opinions. Although Rahul met with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge after hearing everyone out, the final decision was deferred.

It was in this context that Sonia Gandhi, who also serves as the chairperson of the 'INDIA' alliance, participated in the selection process. The phone call she made to Antony ultimately determined who would be Kerala's next Chief Minister.

Antony, a three-time Chief Minister of Kerala, last held the office in 2001. However, he resigned in 2004, taking moral responsibility for the UDF's setback in the Lok Sabha elections. Oommen Chandy then took over as Chief Minister, while Antony moved to Delhi as a Union Minister. Known for his simplicity and close ties with Sonia Gandhi, Antony was often referred to in Delhi circles as the "leader who always carries a resignation letter in his pocket."

Antony warned Sonia Gandhi about the practical difficulties of appointing K.C. Venugopal as Chief Minister. If Venugopal were to take the post, an MLA would have to vacate a seat. Furthermore, since he is currently an MP, a by-election would be required in his parliamentary constituency as well. Antony pointed out that taking such a risk so soon after the general elections would be unwise. He also reminded her of the possibility that rival factions within the party might unite to defeat Venugopal if he were to contest a by-election.

Antony informed Sonia that the voters preferred V.D. Satheesan and that other coalition partners in the front were also in favor of him. His stance was that a leader should not be "imposed" from Delhi.

This advice from Antony changed Sonia Gandhi’s decision. It is understood that Sonia’s personal preference leaned toward Ramesh Chennithala. Although Venugopal is currently a close confidant of both Sonia and Rahul, Sonia has shared a long-standing friendship with Ramesh.

Furthermore, the Congress leadership calculated that ignoring the public sentiment in favor of Satheesan could negatively impact Priyanka Gandhi—the Wayanad MP—in the future.

Following this, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi requested K.C. Venugopal to remain in Delhi, and V.D. Satheesan was officially designated as the Chief Minister.
