VS Achuthanandan: From Mararikulam to Malampuzha: The Story of a Comeback

English Version:
Some defeats destroy a leader. Others turn them into legends. This is about none other than VS himself. On the first death anniversary of Comrade V. S. Achuthanandan, one cannot help but recall how the moves made by certain quarters to erase him from Kerala’s political landscape were valiantly thwarted.
No matter how much time passes, some people remain immortal in our memories. Not everyone achieves that, but VS will be remembered as long as Kerala exists. He will forever endure in Kerala's political memory as a true humanitarian who took to the streets for the people and fought relentlessly for justice. Future students of history will recognize the deep mark VS left on land struggles, labor movements, and anti-corruption crusades.
However, the toughest battles of his life were fought not just against political opponents, but also against covert forces within his own party. At this moment, two of the most decisive events in VS’s political career come to mind: the unexpected defeat in Mararikulam in 1996 and the triumphant victory in 2001, overcoming sabotage attempts in Malampuzha. These two events, which altered the course of Kerala politics, were not merely a leader's personal wins and losses; they stood as testimonials to the complex interplay of party politics, factionalism, public support, and journalism.
In the 1996 elections, the Left Democratic Front recorded a historic victory in Kerala. Most people believed that VS would be the primary claimant to that triumph. As the only Politburo member in the contest and a leader backed by the national leadership, the path to the Chief Minister’s chair lay wide open for him.
Yet, VS suffered a shock defeat in Mararikulam. Even P. J. Francis of the Congress must have been astounded by his own victory, defeating VS by a margin of 1,965 votes.
That defeat was not just a routine election result. The allegations of a well-orchestrated internal sabotage behind it remain a topic of debate in Kerala politics to this day. That single defeat was enough to shift the Chief Minister’s post in another direction—toward E. K. Nayanar. Nayanar, who was nowhere in the initial picture, became the Chief Minister as a consensus candidate and later secured his seat through a by-election in Trikaripur.
After such a massive setback, most politicians would either retire or fade into obscurity. VS did neither. He was guided by the firm conviction that "the people have not defeated me." Bouncing back strongly at the next opportunity was not just a wish; it was a resolute determination.
Malampuzha Was No Ordinary Constituency
In 2001, new tactics were deployed to sideline VS—the strategy was to kill him with kindness. He was given a ticket in Malampuzha in Palakkad district, considered the safest fortress of the CPI(M). Malampuzha was also the stronghold of N. Sundaran (Sividasa) Menon, who himself harbored dreams of becoming Chief Minister.
As the campaign began, Room No. 14 of the Government Rest House in Palakkad town became the epicenter of a major chapter in Kerala politics. It was VS’s favorite room. Discussions took place there every evening. The local situation in each panchayat, the moves of opponents, the pulse of the voters, and the tempo of the campaign were all scrutinized meticulously. VS always gave special importance to the insights gathered from journalists.
At that time, I was the Palakkad correspondent for Kerala Kaumudi. I had shared a long-standing personal rapport with VS. When he came to contest in Malampuzha, that closeness turned into responsibilities. M. S. Mani, Editor of Kerala Kaumudi, and B. C. Jojo, then Thiruvananthapuram Bureau Chief, arrived in Palakkad to observe VS’s election campaign. One evening, the three of us met VS in Room No. 14. Mani Sir promised VS all possible support for the election and assigned me the task of coordinating everything. I was also tasked with meeting VS every evening to update him on developments.
With only days left for the campaign to conclude, I received a shocking piece of information: just like in Mararikulam, a sabotage was being planned here as well!
It became clear that certain factions were joining hands to capitalize on the resentment of some local leaders who were denied seats. Additionally, the Tamil Nadu lobby feared that if VS came to power, it would adversely affect them on issues like Parambikulam and Mullaperiyar. The culprits behind the Malabar Cements scam had also poured money and manpower into defeating him. I gathered all these details through my journalistic network.
That very night, I met VS and requested a private conversation. Suresh and Shahjahan, who were with him, were asked to step outside. I explained everything happening behind the scenes in detail. Listening to it all, he remained silent. Then, he stood up, folded his hands in his characteristic style, and asked me to meet him the next evening.
As usual, I went the following evening. VS told me, "I conducted a detailed inquiry. Everything Jagadish said is true." He added that N. N. Krishnadas and A. Prabhakaran had been entrusted with taking necessary defensive measures. From then on, VS proceeded with extreme caution. Information was collected at the booth level, continuous communication was maintained with cadres, and every loophole in the election machinery was plugged. This vigilance laid the foundation for his eventual victory in Malampuzha.
Tense Hours at Mission School
Those present at the Palakkad Mission School on counting day can never forget the intense anxiety. In the initial rounds, UDF candidate Satheesan Pacheni was leading. Only one question echoed through the counting hall: "Will Mararikulam repeat itself here?"
However, as the rounds progressed, the tide turned. Votes from rural areas and working-class belts propelled VS into the lead. By the final round, the outcome was clear—a victory by a margin of 4,703 votes. Yet, VS could not view that margin as a true reflection of his popular strength.
While counting was underway, I received a call from VS:
"Where are you Jagadish?"
I replied that I was at the counting center at Mission School. He asked me to come to the Rest House. When I arrived, a large crowd had gathered outside, and the workers were in high spirits. But inside Room No. 14, VS was alone. He stood for a long time, placing one foot on the window sill, staring outside.
Then VS said, "It is not I who won, it is Satheesan..."
He asked me to call M. S. Mani. I dialed Mani Sir from my phone and handed it over. VS told him that without the timely information provided by Jagadish and the support of Kerala Kaumudi, he would not have won. The conversation lasted for about fifteen minutes.
The next day, VS left for Thiruvananthapuram. He asked me to prepare a detailed report on the sabotage attempts and background maneuvers during the election. His specific instruction was not to send it to the AKG Centre, but directly to his personal home address. The details in that report eventually reached the Party Politburo. Though public action was not taken against those who tried to bring VS down, history bears witness that over time, most of the key players behind those moves became irrelevant within the party.
V. S. Achuthanandan’s life is not merely the story of a politician. Even when he held no official power, he was a leader of the people; and when he did attain power, he remained their voice. Perhaps that is why, despite facing immense internal opposition within his party, the public held him close to their hearts.
Looking back on his first death anniversary, what comes to mind is not the formal face of a political leader, but the image of a warrior who dedicated his life to the people—one who defied both internal party crises and external opposition with equal fortitude.
What made V. S. Achuthanandan’s political journey unique was not power, but struggle. Whether at the pinnacle of power or sitting on the opposition benches, he raised his voice for the common man with unwavering consistency. Land mafia, corruption, illegal encroachments, environmental protection, labor rights—on every issue, he maintained an uncompromising stance.
As we complete one year since V. S. Achuthanandan left us, remembering his life—a symbol of political integrity, pro-people principles, and an indomitable fighting spirit that never yielded to sabotage—is a necessary tribute to history. In the political memory of Kerala, his name will forever endure as a leader of the masses. The political school of thought that is V. S. Achuthanandan will continue to inspire Kerala for generations to come.
