ചെന്നൈ : പ്രശസ്ത തമിഴ് ചലച്ചിത്ര സംവിധായകനും തിരക്കഥാകൃത്തും നടനുമായ ഭാരതിരാജ (84) അന്തരിച്ചു. 

 വാർധക്യസഹജമായ അസുഖങ്ങളെ തുടർന്ന് ചികിത്സയിലായിരിക്കെയാണ് അന്ത്യം. തമിഴ് ഗ്രാമീണതയുടെ തനിമയും ചൂരും സിനിമകളിലേക്ക് ആവാഹിച്ച് തമിഴ് ചലച്ചിത്ര ശാഖയുടെ വഴിമാറ്റിവിട്ട അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ വിയോഗം ഇന്ത്യൻ സിനിമയ്ക്ക് തന്നെ നികത്താനാകാത്ത നഷ്ടമാണ്. 

മകൻ മനോജ് ഭാരതിരാജയുടെ വിയോഗത്തെ തുടർന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം ഏറെ നാളായി മാനസിക ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടിലായിരുന്നു.

തമിഴ് സിനിമയെ സ്റ്റുഡിയോ സെറ്റുകളിൽ നിന്നും ഔട്ട്ഡോർ ലൊക്കേഷനുകളിലേക്കും യഥാർത്ഥ ഗ്രാമങ്ങളിലേക്കും ഇറക്കിക്കൊണ്ടുവന്നത് ഭാരതിരാജയാണ്. കറുത്ത പശ്ചാത്തലമുള്ള നായികമാരെയും സാധാരണക്കാരായ നായകന്മാരെയും തന്റെ സിനിമകളിൽ പ്രധാന കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളാക്കി അദ്ദേഹം അന്നത്തെ സൗന്ദര്യ സങ്കൽപ്പങ്ങളെ തിരുത്തിക്കുറിച്ചു.

1977-ൽ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ '16 വയതിനിലേ' എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിലൂടെയാണ് അദ്ദേഹം സംവിധായകനായി അരങ്ങേറ്റം കുറിച്ചത്. കമൽഹാസൻ, രജനീകാന്ത്, ശ്രീദേവി എന്നിവർ പ്രധാന വേഷങ്ങളിലെത്തിയ ഈ ചിത്രം തമിഴ് സിനിമയിലെ ഒരു നാഴികക്കല്ലായി മാറി.

സിഗപ്പു റോജകൾ, നിഴൽഗൽ, അലൈകൾ ഓയിവതില്ലൈ, മുതൽ മര്യാദൈ, കിഴക്കു സീമയിലെ, കറുത്തമ്മ എന്നിവയാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും ശ്രദ്ധേയമായ ചിത്രങ്ങൾ.

2020-ൽ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ 'മീണ്ടും ഒരു മര്യാദൈ' എന്ന ചിത്രമാണ് അദ്ദേഹം അവസാനമായി സംവിധാനം ചെയ്തത്.

സംവിധാനത്തിന് പുറമെ മികച്ചൊരു നടൻ കൂടിയായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം. അടുത്തിടെ മോഹൻലാൽ നായകനായ 'തുടരും' എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിൽ ഒരു പഴയകാല സ്റ്റണ്ട് മാസ്റ്ററുടെ വേഷത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹം എത്തിയിരുന്നു.  2013-ലെ കേരള സംസ്ഥാന ചലച്ചിത്ര അവാർഡ് നിർണയ ജൂറിയുടെ ചെയർമാനായും ഭാരതിരാജ പ്രവർത്തിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

തമിഴ് സിനിമയ്ക്ക് നൽകിയ സമഗ്ര സംഭാവനകൾ പരിഗണിച്ച് തമിഴ് സിനിമാ ലോകം 'ഇയക്കുനർ ഇമയം' (സംവിധായകരുടെ ഹിമാലയം) എന്ന പദവി നൽകിയാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ആദരിച്ചത്.
 6 തവണ ദേശീയ ചലച്ചിത്ര അവാർഡുകൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ തേടിയെത്തി.

2004-ൽ രാജ്യം പത്മശ്രീ പുരസ്കാരം നൽകി അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ആദരിച്ചു. ഫിലിംഫെയർ അവാർഡുകൾ, തമിഴ്നാട് സംസ്ഥാന ചലച്ചിത്ര അവാർഡുകൾ തുടങ്ങി നിരവധി അംഗീകാരങ്ങൾ അദ്ദേഹം സ്വന്തമാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.

He breathed his last while undergoing treatment for age-related ailments. His demise is an irreparable loss to Indian cinema, as he was a visionary who transformed the course of Tamil filmmaking by infusing his movies with the authentic essence and flavor of rural Tamil life.

He had been facing severe mental distress for some time following the demise of his son, Manoj Bharathiraja.

The Director Who Redefined Cinema
Bharathiraja was the pioneer who brought Tamil cinema out of artificial studio sets into outdoor locations and real villages. He shattered the conventional beauty standards of the time by casting dark-complexioned heroines and ordinary-looking men as the main characters in his films.

He made his directorial debut in 1977 with the film '16 Vayathinile'. Starring Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, and Sridevi in lead roles, this movie became a major milestone in Tamil cinema.

Beyond Direction: Acting and Accolades
Apart from direction, he was also an excellent actor. Recently, he played the role of an old-school stunt master in the Mohanlal-starrer film 'Thudarum'. He had also served as the Chairman of the Kerala State Film Awards Jury in 2013.

In recognition of his comprehensive contributions to Tamil cinema, the Tamil film fraternity honored him with the title 'Iyakkunar Imayam' (The Himalayas among Directors).

He won the National Film Award 6 times.

In 2004, the nation honored him with the Padma Shri award.

He was also the recipient of several other accolades, including the Filmfare Awards and the Tamil Nadu State Film Awards.
