A total of 22,000 police officers were deployed across the country, with 8,000 in Paris alone. As part of measures to control the violence, tram services in the city were suspended, several metro stations were closed, and bus services were limited.
When PSG won the same trophy last year, fans had looted shops. Anticipating a repeat, many shop owners on the Champs-Élysées had boarded up their doors and windows for safety, but the rioters tore them down.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez informed that seven police officers were injured during the clashes. He stated that the incidents on the streets were "completely unacceptable," despite having earlier claimed that the security arrangements were part of a "very robust and secure system."
For Arsenal, it was a night of deep disappointment. The club had reached its first Champions League final in nearly two decades, only to lose the title in a penalty shootout.
Despite the widespread violence in the city, the PSG players' victory parade is expected to take place on Sunday afternoon. Following the parade, which will pass through the Champ de Mars near the Eiffel Tower, French President Emmanuel Macron will host a banquet for the team.
"France is the only place where a football club's victory leads to riots. It is only in France that everyone has to lock themselves indoors on the night of a victory out of fear of violence," said Marine Le Pen, far-right political leader and three-time presidential candidate, reacting to the violence.
Such incidents are not unprecedented in France. Last year, when PSG won the Champions League, the celebrations also turned violent, claiming the lives of two fans.
