അബ്ദുല് റഹീമിന്റെ ഔദ്യോഗിക എക്സിറ്റ് വിസ നടപടികള് ഇതിനകം തന്നെ പൂര്ത്തിയായിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇനി രാജ്യം വിടുന്നതിനുള്ള ഇമിഗ്രേഷന് ക്ലിയറന്സ് മാത്രമാണ് അവശേഷിക്കുന്നത്. ഈ സാങ്കേതിക നടപടിക്രമങ്ങള് കൂടി പൂര്ത്തിയാകുന്നതോടെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ഏതു സമയത്തും കേരളത്തിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങാന് സാധിക്കും.
2006 നവംബറിലാണ് 26-ാം വയസ്സില് അബ്ദുല് റഹീം ഡ്രൈവര് വിസയില് സൗദി അറേബ്യയില് എത്തുന്നത്. സ്പോണ്സറുടെ 15 വയസ്സുകാരനായ ഭിന്നശേഷിക്കാരനായ മകന് അനസ് അല് ഫായിസിന്റെ പരിചാരകനായും റഹീം ജോലി നോക്കിയിരുന്നു. കഴുത്തിന് താഴെ ചലനശേഷി ഇല്ലാത്ത അനസിന് ജീവന് നിലനിര്ത്താന് പ്രത്യേക മെഡിക്കല് ഉപകരണങ്ങള് ഘടിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
ഒരു ദിവസം കാറില് യാത്ര ചെയ്യുന്നതിനിടെ റഹീമുമായി ഉണ്ടായ ഒരു തര്ക്കത്തിനിടയില്, കുട്ടിക്ക് നേരെ കൈപോയപ്പോള് റഹീമിന്റെ കൈ അബദ്ധത്തില് കുട്ടിയുടെ കഴുത്തില് ഘടിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്ന ജീവന് രക്ഷാ ഉപകരണത്തിന്റെ ട്യൂബില് തട്ടുകയും അത് ഊരിപ്പോവുകയുമായിരുന്നു. ശ്വാസം തടസ്സപ്പെട്ട് കുട്ടി ഉടന് തന്നെ മരിച്ചു. തുടര്ന്നാണ് കൊലപാതകക്കുറ്റം ചുമത്തി 2006 ഡിസംബറില് റഹീമിനെ സൗദി പൊലീസ് അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്യുന്നത്.
2011-ല് റിയാദിലെ ലോവര് കോടതി റഹീമിന് വധശിക്ഷ വിധിച്ചു. പിന്നീട് സൗദി സുപ്രീം കോടതി ഉള്പ്പെടെയുള്ള ഉയര്ന്ന കോടതികള് ഈ ശിക്ഷ ശരിവച്ചു. ഇതിനിടയില് റഹീമിന്റെ പിതാവ് മരിക്കുകയും കുടുംബം വലിയ പ്രതിസന്ധിയിലാവുകയും ചെയ്തു. റഹീമിനെ രക്ഷിക്കാന് റിയാദിലെ മലയാളി കൂട്ടായ്മകളും സാമൂഹിക പ്രവര്ത്തകരും ചേര്ന്ന് വലിയ നയതന്ത്ര-നിയമപരമായ ശ്രമങ്ങള് നടത്തിവരികയായിരുന്നു.
ലോക മലയാളി ഒന്നിച്ച 'രക്തപ്പണം' കാമ്പെയിന്
തുടര്ച്ചയായ ചര്ച്ചകള്ക്കൊടുവില്, വധശിക്ഷ നടപ്പാക്കുന്നതിന് തൊട്ടുമുന്പ് കുട്ടിയുടെ കുടുംബം റഹീമിന് മാപ്പ് നല്കാന് തയ്യാറായി. എന്നാല് അതിനായി അവര് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടത് 30 മില്യണ് സൗദി റിയാല് (ഏകദേശം 34.35 കോടി ഇന്ത്യന് രൂപ) എന്ന ഭീമമായ തുകയാണ്.
ഒരു സാധാരണ കുടുംബത്തിന് ചിന്തിക്കാന് പോലും കഴിയാത്ത ഈ തുക സമാഹരിക്കാന് കേരളക്കരയും ആഗോള മലയാളികളും ഒന്നിച്ച് കൈകോര്ത്തു. ബോബി ചെമ്മണൂര് ഉള്പ്പെടെയുള്ള പൊതുപ്രവര്ത്തകരും ജനങ്ങളും തെരുവില് ഇറങ്ങിയും നടത്തിയ ചരിത്രപരമായ ക്രൗഡ് ഫണ്ടിംഗിലൂടെ ദിവസങ്ങള്ക്കുള്ളില് ഈ തുക സമാഹരിച്ചു.
ദിയാധനം സ്വീകരിച്ചതോടെ കുട്ടിയുടെ കുടുംബം കോടതിയില് മാപ്പുനല്കുകയും റഹീമിന്റെ വധശിക്ഷ റദ്ദാക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. എങ്കിലും, വ്യക്തിപരമായ കേസ് ഒത്തുതീര്പ്പായ ശേഷവും രാജ്യത്തെ നിയമവ്യവസ്ഥയ്ക്ക് എതിരായ കുറ്റകൃത്യം എന്ന നിലയില് പൊതുനിയമപ്രകാരം റഹീമിന് കോടതി 20 വര്ഷത്തെ തടവുശിക്ഷ വിധിച്ചിരുന്നു.
അറസ്റ്റിലായ 2006 ഡിസംബര് മുതല് കണക്കാക്കുമ്പോള് റഹീമിന്റെ 20 വര്ഷത്തെ തടവുശിക്ഷാ കാലാവധി പൂര്ത്തിയായി. തുടര്ന്ന് റിയാദിലെ അബ്ദുറഹീം നിയമസഹായ സമിതിയുടെയും ഇന്ത്യന് എംബസിയുടെയും സാമൂഹിക പ്രവര്ത്തകരുടെയും നിരന്തര ശ്രമങ്ങള്ക്കൊടുവിലാണ് ഇപ്പോള് മോചന ഉത്തരവ് ലഭ്യമായിരിക്കുന്നത്.

One day, during a dispute while traveling in a car, Rahim waved his hand toward the boy. In the process, his hand accidentally struck and detached the tube of the life-support device attached to the boy's neck. The boy choked and died on the spot. Subsequently, Saudi police arrested Rahim in December 2006 on charges of murder.
In 2011, a lower court in Riyadh sentenced Rahim to death. Later, higher courts, including the Saudi Supreme Court, upheld this sentence. In the meantime, Rahim's father passed away, leaving the family in deep crisis. To save Rahim, Malayali collectives and social workers in Riyadh had been making extensive diplomatic and legal efforts.
The 'Blood Money' Campaign That United Global Malayalis
Following continuous negotiations, just before the death sentence was to be executed, the boy's family agreed to pardon Rahim. However, they demanded a staggering sum of 30 million Saudi Riyals (approximately ?34.35 crore INR) as blood money (Diya).
To raise this astronomical amount—something an ordinary family could never even dream of—the people of Kerala and global Malayalis joined hands. The amount was pooled within a matter of days through a historic crowdfunding campaign, which saw public figures like Boby Chemmanur and ordinary citizens take to the streets.
Upon receiving the blood money, the boy's family granted a pardon in court, and Rahim's death sentence was commuted. However, even after the personal case was settled, the court sentenced Rahim to 20 years in prison under public law (Public Rights Act) for committing an offense against the state's legal system.
Counting from December 2006, when he was first arrested, Rahim has completed his 20-year prison sentence. Following the relentless efforts of the Abdul Rahim Legal Assistance Committee in Riyadh, the Indian Embassy, and various social workers, his release order has now finally been secured.
