Major Fire Breakout at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Multi-Specialty Block; No Casualties Reported

തിരുവനന്തപുരം : തിരുവനന്തപുരം മെഡിക്കല്‍ കോളേജ് ആശുപത്രിയിലെ മള്‍ട്ടി സ്പെഷ്യാലിറ്റി ബ്ലോക്കില്‍ വന്‍ തീപിടിത്തമുണ്ടായി. ആര്‍ക്കും പരിക്കില്ലെന്നാണ് പ്രാഥമിക വിവരം. മള്‍ട്ടി സ്പെഷ്യാലിറ്റി ബ്ലോക്കിലെ ഒന്നാം നിലയിലുള്ള സര്‍ജിക്കല്‍ ഐ.സി.യുവിലാണ് തീ ആദ്യം പടര്‍ന്നത്. 

ഐ.സി.യുവിനുള്ളിലെ ഒരു വെന്റിലേറ്ററില്‍ ഉണ്ടായ ഷോര്‍ട്ട് സര്‍ക്യൂട്ടാണ് തീപിടിത്തത്തിന് കാരണമായതെന്നാണ് പ്രാഥമിക നിഗമനം.

തീപിടിത്തം ഉണ്ടായ ഉടന്‍ തന്നെ സര്‍ജിക്കല്‍ ഐ.സി.യുവില്‍ ചികിത്സയിലായിരുന്ന രോഗികളെയും സമീപത്തെ അത്യാഹിത വിഭാഗത്തില്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നവരെയും സുരക്ഷിത സ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലേക്ക് മാറ്റി. 33 രോഗികളെയാണ് ഉടന്‍ തന്നെ മറ്റ് ഐ.സി.യുകളിലേക്ക് മാറ്റിയത്.

വിവരമറിഞ്ഞ ഉടന്‍ തന്നെ ഫയര്‍ഫോഴ്സിന്റെ നാല് യൂണിറ്റുകള്‍ സ്ഥലത്തെത്തി. വെന്റിലേറ്ററില്‍ നിന്ന് തീ പടരുന്നത് തടയാനായി ഓക്‌സിജന്‍ വിതരണം ഉടന്‍ തന്നെ നിര്‍ത്തിവച്ചു. നിലവില്‍ തീ പൂര്‍ണ്ണമായും നിയന്ത്രണവിധേയമാണ്.

തീപിടിത്തത്തെത്തുടര്‍ന്ന് കെട്ടിടത്തില്‍ കനത്ത പുക പടര്‍ന്നത് രോഗികളെയും കൂട്ടിരിപ്പുകാരെയും അല്പനേരം പരിഭ്രാന്തിയിലാക്കി. എന്നാല്‍ ആശുപത്രി ജീവനക്കാരും ഫയര്‍ഫോഴ്സും ചേര്‍ന്ന് സമയോചിതമായി ഇടപെട്ടതിനാല്‍ വലിയൊരു അപകടം ഒഴിവായി.

ആശുപത്രി അധികൃതരും തിരുവനന്തപുരം മേയറും സ്ഥലത്തെത്തി സ്ഥിതിഗതികള്‍ വിലയിരുത്തി. ആശങ്കപ്പെടേണ്ട സാഹചര്യമില്ലെന്നും രോഗികളെല്ലാവരും സുരക്ഷിതരാണെന്നും അധികൃതര്‍ അറിയിച്ചു. പുക നിറഞ്ഞതിനാല്‍ ഈ ബ്ലോക്കിന്റെ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനം താല്‍ക്കാലികമായി നിയന്ത്രിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

വെന്റിലേറ്ററില്‍ ഉണ്ടായ സാങ്കേതിക തകരാറിനെക്കുറിച്ച് വിശദമായ അന്വേഷണം നടത്താന്‍ ആരോഗ്യവകുപ്പ് ഉത്തരവിട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇലക്ട്രിക്കല്‍ ഇന്‍സ്‌പെക്ടറേറ്റ് വിഭാഗം ഐ.സി.യു പരിശോധിക്കും.

സര്‍ജിക്കല്‍ ഐ.സി.യുവിന്റെ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനം താല്‍ക്കാലികമായി നിര്‍ത്തുകയും രോഗികളെ സൂപ്പര്‍ സ്‌പെഷ്യാലിറ്റി ബ്ലോക്കിലെയും കാഷ്വാലിറ്റിയിലെയും ഐ.സി.യുകളിലേക്ക് മാറ്റുകയും ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്.

 ഒ.പി വിഭാഗവും മറ്റ് അടിയന്തര സേവനങ്ങളും തടസ്സമില്ലാതെ തുടരുന്നുണ്ടെന്ന് ആശുപത്രി സൂപ്രണ്ട് അറിയിച്ചു.

Summary: A major fire broke out today at the Multi-Specialty Block of the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. According to preliminary reports, no injuries have been reported. The fire originated in the Surgical ICU located on the first floor of the block.

The fire is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit in a ventilator inside the ICU. Immediately following the outbreak, patients in the Surgical ICU and the nearby casualty department were evacuated to safety. A total of 33 patients were swiftly moved to other ICUs.

Fire Force Intervention: Four units of the Fire Force arrived at the scene promptly.  Oxygen supply was immediately disconnected to prevent the fire from spreading further from the ventilator. The blaze is now completely under control.

While heavy smoke inside the building caused temporary panic among patients and bystanders, timely intervention by hospital staff and firemen averted a major disaster.

Hospital authorities and the Thiruvananthapuram Mayor visited the site to assess the situation. Officials have confirmed that there is no cause for alarm and all patients are safe. Operations in this specific block have been temporarily restricted due to smoke accumulation.

Official Investigation

The Health Department has ordered a detailed investigation into the technical failure of the ventilator. The Electrical Inspectorate department will conduct a thorough inspection of the ICU.

While the Surgical ICU remains temporarily closed—with patients redistributed to the Super Specialty and Casualty ICUs—the Outpatient (OP) department and other emergency services continue to function without interruption, according to the Hospital Superintendent.
