Speaking to the state broadcaster IRIB (as reported by Iran International), Boroujerdi stated that the move reflects a new "sovereign regime" in the strait after decades. "Collecting $2 million as transit fees from some vessels crossing the strait reflects Iran's strength," Boroujerdi said. He added that because war incurs significant costs, it is natural for Iran to collect these fees, claiming the move demonstrates the Islamic Republic's "authority."
Boroujerdi’s remarks follow a warning from US President Donald Trump last week, stating that the United States could target Iran’s power infrastructure if the strait is not reopened within 48 hours. Trump declared that if Iran did not open the strait, the US would destroy its "various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST!"
In response, the Iranian lawmaker noted that Israel’s energy infrastructure is also within Iran’s reach and could be destroyed "within a day."
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian also responded to Trump on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the strait remains "open to everyone" except Iran’s adversaries.
"The illusion of erasing Iran from the map shows desperation against the will of a history-making nation. Threats and terror only strengthen our unity. The Strait of Hormuz is open to all except those who violate our soil," Pezeshkian wrote, adding that Tehran would firmly confront threats on the battlefield.
Following Trump’s ultimatum, Iran warned that the Strait of Hormuz—which is crucial for global oil exports—would be "completely closed" immediately if the US follows through on its threat to attack power plants.
While Tehran claims safe passage is available for vessels from countries other than its enemies, the ongoing attacks and tension have effectively halted nearly all tanker traffic. Roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes through this narrow waterway.
