ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കന് പേസര്മാരുടെ ആക്രമണത്തിന് മുന്നില് ഇന്ത്യന് മുന്നിര തകരുന്ന കാഴ്ചയാണ് കണ്ടത്. ആദ്യ ഓവറില് തന്നെ ഇഷാന് കിഷനെ എയ്ഡന് മാര്ക്രം പുറത്താക്കി. തൊട്ടുപിന്നാലെ തിലക് വര്മയും വീണതോടെ ഇന്ത്യ 13/2 എന്ന നിലയിലായി. കുറച്ചുനേരം പിടിച്ചുനിന്നുവെങ്കിലും 15 റണ്സെടുത്ത അഭിഷേക് ശര്മയെ മാര്ക്കോ യാന്സന് പുറത്താക്കി. പവര്പ്ലേ അവസാനിക്കുമ്പോള് ഇന്ത്യ 31/3 എന്ന പരിതാപകരമായ അവസ്ഥയിലായിരുന്നു.
പിന്നീട് ക്യാപ്ടന് സൂര്യകുമാര് യാദവും വാഷിംഗ്ടണ് സുന്ദറും ഒരു വീണ്ടെടുപ്പിന് ശ്രമിച്ചെങ്കിലും സുന്ദര് (11) വേഗത്തില് പുറത്തായി. പത്താം ഓവറില് ക്യാപ്റ്റന് സൂര്യകുമാര് യാദവും പുറത്തായതോടെ ഇന്ത്യ 57/5 എന്ന നിലയിലേക്ക് തകര്ന്നു. മധ്യ ഓവറുകളില് ബൗണ്ടറികള് കണ്ടെത്താന് ഇന്ത്യ പാടുപെട്ടു. ഇതോടെ ആവശ്യമായ റണ് റേറ്റ് 15-ന് മുകളിലേക്ക് കുതിച്ചു.
മത്സരത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും നിര്ണ്ണായകമായത് കേശവ് മഹാരാജ് എറിഞ്ഞ 15-ാം ഓവറായിരുന്നു. ഒരേ ഓവറില് ഹാര്ദിക് പാണ്ഡ്യ (18), റിങ്കു സിംഗ് (0), അര്ഷദീപ് സിംഗ് (1) എന്നിവരെ മഹാരാജ് പുറത്താക്കി. ഈ മൂന്ന് വിക്കറ്റുകള് ഇന്ത്യയുടെ വിജയപ്രതീക്ഷകള് പൂര്ണ്ണമായും അവസാനിപ്പിച്ചു.
ഇന്ത്യന് നിരയില് ഭേദപ്പെട്ട പ്രകടനം കാഴ്ചവച്ചത് ശിവം ദുബെ മാത്രമാണ്. 42 റണ്സെടുത്ത ദുബെ ഇന്ത്യയെ 100 കടക്കാന് സഹായിച്ചു. എന്നാല് മറുവശത്ത് പിന്തുണ നല്കാന് ആരുമില്ലാതിരുന്നത് തിരിച്ചടിയായി.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, South Africa faced early jolts. They were reeling at 20/3 against the fiery spells of Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh. However, the Indian bowlers lost their momentum thereafter. A crucial 97-run partnership between veteran David Miller (63) and youngster Dewald Brevis (45) rescued the Proteas.
In the death overs, Tristan Stubbs’ (44*) explosive batting propelled the South African score to 187. Stubbs took a heavy toll on the final over bowled by Hardik Pandya, smashing 20 runs in that over alone.
The Indian top order crumbled under the pressure of the South African pace attack. Ishan Kishan was dismissed by Aiden Markram in the very first over. Tilak Varma followed shortly after, leaving India struggling at 13/2. Although Abhishek Sharma tried to hold the fort for a while, he was dismissed for 15 by Marco Jansen. By the end of the Powerplay, India was in a dire state at 31/3.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav and Washington Sundar attempted a recovery, but Sundar (11) fell quickly. When the skipper himself was dismissed in the 10th over, India’s score stood at a dismal 57/5. As the boundaries dried up in the middle overs, the required run rate climbed above 15.
The 15th over bowled by Keshav Maharaj proved to be the final nail in the coffin. Maharaj claimed the wickets of Hardik Pandya (18), Rinku Singh (0), and Arshdeep Singh (1) in the same over. This triple-wicket blow effectively ended India’s hopes of a comeback.
Shivam Dube was the lone bright spot in the Indian lineup, scoring 42 runs to help the team cross the 100-run mark. However, the lack of support from the other end proved fatal.
