മ്‌ളാത്തി ചേടത്തി മേഘാലയയിലെ ഗാരോ ഹില്‍സില്‍ ഹാപ്പിയാണ്, കൂട്ടിന് നാലു നായ്ക്കളും

മേഘാലയയിലെ ഗാരോ ഹില്‍സില്‍ നാല് നായ്ക്കളെ പരിപാലിച്ചും പേരക്കുട്ടികളെ താലോലിച്ചും സ്വസ്ഥമായ കുടുംബജീവിതം നയിച്ചിരുന്ന ഒരു റിട്ടയേര്‍ഡ് കോളേജ് അധ്യാപിക, ഒരു സിനിമയില്‍ അഭിനയിക്കാനായി 3,000 കിലോമീറ്ററിലധികം ദൂരം സഞ്ചരിച്ച് കേരളത്തിലെത്തി. തനിക്ക് വശമില്ലാത്ത ഒരു ഭാഷയെ നേരിട്ടുകൊണ്ട്, കാമറയ്ക്ക് മുന്നിലെത്തുമ്പോള്‍ മാത്രം അര്‍ത്ഥം വെളിപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു കഥാപാത്രത്തെ അവര്‍ ഏറ്റെടുത്തു. ആ സിനിമ, 'എക്കോ', മോമിന്റെ ജീവിതഗതി തന്നെ മാറ്റി.

മേഘാലയയിലെ ഗോത്രവര്‍ഗ്ഗമായ 'ഗാരോ' വംശജയായ മോമിന് അഭിനയം ഒരിക്കലും ഒരു ലക്ഷ്യമോ കൗതുകമോ ആയിരുന്നില്ല. 'ഞാന്‍ വളര്‍ന്ന പട്ടണത്തില്‍ സിനിമയോ നാടകമോ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല,' അവര്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. 'ക്ലാസ് മുറിയിലെ അധ്യാപനം ഒരുതരം പ്രകടനമാണെന്ന് നിങ്ങള്‍ വിളിക്കുമെങ്കില്‍ അല്ലാതെ, ഞാന്‍ അഭിനയത്തില്‍ പരിശീലനം നേടിയിട്ടില്ല,' അവര്‍ ചിരിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് പറഞ്ഞു.

ടുറ ഗവണ്‍മെന്റ് കോളേജിലെ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് അധ്യാപികയായിരുന്ന അവര്‍ക്ക് റൊമാന്റിക് കവിതകളോടായിരുന്നു പ്രിയം. ഒരു കാമറ തന്റെ മുഖം പകര്‍ത്തിയെടുക്കുമെന്ന് അവര്‍ ഒരിക്കലും കരുതിയിരുന്നില്ല. എങ്കിലും 'എക്കോ' അവര്‍ക്ക് അപ്രതീക്ഷിതമായ ഒരു സാഹസികത വാഗ്ദാനം ചെയ്തു.

'തുടക്കത്തില്‍ എനിക്ക് മടിയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു, കാരണം അഭിനയപരിചയമില്ലാത്തതും ദൂരയാത്രയുമായിരുന്നു പ്രശ്‌നം. എന്നാല്‍ മകളാണ് എന്നെ പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിച്ചത്. നമ്മില്‍ത്തന്നെ വിശ്വാസമര്‍പ്പിച്ച് പുതിയ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ പരീക്ഷിക്കണമെന്ന് അവള്‍ പറഞ്ഞു,' മോമിന്‍ ഓര്‍ക്കുന്നു.

പശ്ചിമഘട്ടത്തിലെ ഏകാന്തജീവിതം

'എക്കോ' എന്ന സിനിമയില്‍ മ്ലാത്തി ചേട്ടത്തി എന്ന നിഗൂഢമായ ഒരു വയോധികയുടെ വേഷമാണ് അവര്‍ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്തത്. രണ്ടാം ലോകമഹായുദ്ധകാലത്തെ ജാപ്പനീസ് അധിനിവേശ കാലത്ത് മലേഷ്യയില്‍ നിന്ന് പലായനം ചെയ്ത് കേരളത്തിലെത്തിയ ഒരാളാണ് കഥാപാത്രം. പശ്ചിമഘട്ടത്തിലെ കാടുകള്‍ക്കിടയിലുള്ള തകരാറായ ഒരു വീട്ടില്‍ നായ്ക്കള്‍ക്കും മേഘങ്ങള്‍ക്കുമൊപ്പം ഒറ്റയ്ക്ക് കഴിയുന്ന മ്ലാത്തിയുടെ വേഷം സിനിമയുടെ കേന്ദ്രബിന്ദുവാണ്.

ചുരുങ്ങിയ ബജറ്റില്‍ 45 ദിവസം കൊണ്ട് പൂര്‍ത്തിയാക്കിയ 'എക്കോ', നെറ്റ്ഫ്‌ലിക്‌സില്‍ ലഭ്യമാണ്. ഈ ചിത്രം വലിയ നിരൂപക പ്രശംസയാണ് നേടിയത്. പ്രത്യേകിച്ചും മോമിന്റെ സ്വാഭാവികമായ പ്രകടനം ഏറെ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.

അറബ്-മലായ് ഛായയുള്ള ഒരു മുഖം തേടിയുള്ള സംവിധായകന്‍ ഡിന്‍ജിത്ത് അയ്യത്താന്റെ അന്വേഷണമാണ് മോമിനില്‍ എത്തിയത്. ഗാരോ നാടോടിക്കഥയെ ആസ്പദമാക്കി നിര്‍മ്മിച്ച ഒരു ഹ്രസ്വചിത്രത്തിലെ മോമിന്റെ പ്രകടനം കണ്ട് കേരളത്തിലെ കാസ്റ്റിംഗ് ടീം അവരെ സമീപിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.

'പെട്ടെന്ന് ഞാന്‍ വീണ്ടും ഒരു വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥിയായി,' മോമിന്‍ പറയുന്നു. ഡയലോഗുകള്‍ മലയാളത്തില്‍ പഠിക്കാനും കാമറയ്ക്ക് മുന്നിലെ കൃത്യത പാലിക്കാനും കഠിനാധ്വാനം ചെയ്തു. പിന്നീട് ഡബ്ബിംഗ് നടത്തിയെങ്കിലും, ചിത്രീകരണ സമയത്ത് അവര്‍ എല്ലാ വരികളും കാണാപ്പാഠം പഠിച്ചു തന്നെ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു. പശ്ചിമഘട്ടത്തിലെ കഠിനമായ കാലാവസ്ഥയും മലകയറ്റവും ഒന്നും അവരെ തളര്‍ത്തിയില്ല. 'ഞാന്‍ ഒരു ശക്തയായ സ്ത്രീയാണ്. കേരളത്തിലെ ഭക്ഷണവും എനിക്ക് ഇഷ്ടമായി,' അവര്‍ പറഞ്ഞു.

മോമിന്റെ പ്രകടനത്തെ തമിഴ് നടന്‍ ധനുഷ് ഉള്‍പ്പെടെയുള്ളവര്‍ 'വേള്‍ഡ് ക്ലാസ്സ്' എന്ന് വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ചു. ഇപ്പോള്‍ ബോളിവുഡില്‍ നിന്ന് പോലും അവര്‍ക്ക് അവസരങ്ങള്‍ വരുന്നുണ്ട്. എങ്കിലും തത്കാലം അവര്‍ തന്റെ നാട്ടിലെ വായനക്കൂട്ടായ്മകളിലും കുടുംബത്തോടൊപ്പമുള്ള ജീവിതത്തിലും സന്തോഷം കണ്ടെത്തുന്നു.

തന്റെ പുതിയ യാത്രയെക്കുറിച്ച് പറയുമ്പോള്‍ ഡിലന്‍ തോമസിന്റെ വരികള്‍ അവര്‍ ഓര്‍മ്മിക്കുന്നു: 'വാര്‍ദ്ധക്യം പകലിന്റെ അന്ത്യത്തില്‍ കത്തിയെരിയുകയും ഗര്‍ജ്ജിക്കുകയും വേണം.' ഒരു കാലത്തെ അധ്യാപികയുടെ ഗാംഭീര്യത്തോടെ അവര്‍ ആ വരികള്‍ ചൊല്ലി നിര്‍ത്തി.

Summary: A retired college teacher, who lived a peaceful family life in the Garo Hills of Meghalaya—tending to four dogs and doting on her grandchildren—traveled over 3,000 km to Kerala to act in a film. Braving a language she did not know, she took on a character whose true meaning only revealed itself when the camera began to roll. That film, Eko, changed the course of Momin's life.

For Momin, a member of the indigenous 'Garo' tribe of Meghalaya, acting was never a goal or even a curiosity. "The town where I grew up had no cinema or theater," she said. "Unless you count teaching in a classroom as a kind of performance, I have had no training in acting," she added with a laugh.

A former English teacher at Tura Government College with a fondness for Romantic poetry, she never imagined a camera would one day frame her face. Yet, Eko offered her an unexpected adventure.

"Initially, I was hesitant because I had no acting experience and the long journey was a concern. But it was my daughter who encouraged me. She told me to have faith in myself and try something new," Momin recalls.

Solitary Life in the Western Ghats

In the film Eko, she portrays Mlathi Chettathi, a mysterious elderly woman. The character is someone who fled Malaysia during the Japanese invasion of World War II and arrived in Kerala. The role of Mlathi—who lives alone with dogs and clouds in a dilapidated house amidst the forests of the Western Ghats—is the heart of the film.

Completed in 45 days on a small budget, Eko is now available on Netflix. The film has garnered significant critical acclaim, with Momin’s natural performance receiving particular attention.

Director Dinjith Ayyathan's search for a face with Arab-Malay features eventually led him to Momin. The casting team in Kerala approached her after seeing her performance in a short film based on a Garo folk tale.

"Suddenly, I became a student again," Momin says. She worked hard to learn the Malayalam dialogues and maintain precision in front of the camera. Although the film was later dubbed, she memorized and delivered all her lines during the shoot. Neither the harsh weather of the Western Ghats nor the mountain climbing deterred her. "I am a strong woman. I even liked the food in Kerala," she said.

Momin’s performance was described as "world-class" by many, including Tamil actor Dhanush. Now, opportunities are coming her way even from Bollywood. However, for the time being, she finds happiness in her local book clubs and life with her family.

Speaking about her new journey, she remembers the lines of Dylan Thomas: "Old age should burn and rave at close of day." She concluded the lines with the poise of the teacher she once was.
