തിരുവനന്തപുരം: തിരുവനന്തപുരം കോര്‍പ്പറേഷന്റെ ചരിത്രത്തിലാദ്യമായി ഒരു ബിജെപി ഭരണസമിതി അധികാരമേല്‍ക്കുമ്പോള്‍ അതിനെ നയിക്കാനുള്ള നറുക്ക് മുതിര്‍ന്ന നേതാവായ വി.വി. രാജേഷിന്. ഇന്നു നടന്ന തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പില്‍ 51 വോട്ടിനാണ് രാജേഷ് മേയര്‍ പദവിയിലെത്തിയത്.

തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ്: വെള്ളിയാഴ്ച രാവിലെ നടന്ന കൗണ്‍സില്‍ യോഗത്തില്‍ എം.ആര്‍. ഗോപന്‍ വി.വി. രാജേഷിന്റെ പേര് നിര്‍ദ്ദേശിക്കുകയും വി.ജി. ഗിരികുമാര്‍ അത് പിന്താങ്ങുകയും ചെയ്തു. കേവല ഭൂരിപക്ഷത്തിന് ആവശ്യമായ പിന്തുണ സ്വതന്ത്രനായി വിജയിച്ച പാറ്റൂര്‍ രാധാകൃഷ്ണനില്‍ നിന്ന് ഉറപ്പാക്കിയാണ് രാജേഷ് മേയറായത്.

എല്‍ഡിഎഫിന് വേണ്ടി ആര്‍.പി. ശിവജിയും യുഡിഎഫിന് വേണ്ടി മുന്‍ എംഎല്‍എ കെ.എസ്. ശബരീനാഥനുമാണ് മേയര്‍ സ്ഥാനത്തേക്ക് മത്സരിച്ചത്. 101 അംഗ കൗണ്‍സിലില്‍ 50 സീറ്റുകളാണ് ബിജെപി നേടിയത്. രാധാകൃഷ്ണന്‍ ബിജെപിക്ക് പിന്തുണ പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചതോടെ ഭരണമുറപ്പിക്കാന്‍ ആവശ്യമായ 51 എന്ന മാന്ത്രിക സംഖ്യയില്‍ ബിജെപി എത്തുകയായിരുന്നു.

കരുമം വാര്‍ഡില്‍ നിന്ന് വിജയിച്ച ജി.എസ്. ആശാ നാഥ് ആണ് ഡെപ്യൂട്ടി മേയര്‍ സ്ഥാനത്തു മത്സരിക്കുന്നത്.

മുന്‍ ഡിജിപി ആര്‍. ശ്രീലേഖയെ മേയര്‍ സ്ഥാനത്തേക്ക് പരിഗണിക്കുമെന്ന് ആദ്യഘട്ടത്തില്‍ വാര്‍ത്തകളുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ പാര്‍ട്ടിയിലെ ഒരു വിഭാഗത്തിന്റെയും ആര്‍എസ്എസിന്റയും പിന്തുണ വി.വി. രാജേഷിന് ലഭിച്ചതോടെ അവസാന നിമിഷം അദ്ദേഹത്തെ തീരുമാനിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ശ്രീലേഖയെ നിയമസഭാ തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിലോ അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ ദേശീയ വനിതാ കമ്മിഷന്‍ അധ്യക്ഷ സ്ഥാനത്തേക്കോ പരിഗണിച്ചേക്കുമെന്ന് സൂചനയുണ്ട്. ഡെപ്യൂട്ടി മേയര്‍ സ്ഥാനം ശ്രീലേഖ നിരസിച്ചതോടെയാണ് കരുമം വാര്‍ഡില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള ജി.എസ്. ആശാ നാഥിനെ ആ സ്ഥാനത്തേക്ക് നിശ്ചയിച്ചത്.

വി.വി. രാജേഷ് നിലവില്‍ ബിജെപി സംസ്ഥാന സെക്രട്ടറിയാണ്. മുന്‍പ് തിരുവനന്തപുരം ബിജെപി ജില്ലാ പ്രസിഡന്റായും യുവമോര്‍ച്ച സംസ്ഥാന അധ്യക്ഷനായും പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. കൊടുങ്ങാനൂര്‍ വാര്‍ഡില്‍ നിന്നാണ് ഇത്തവണ വിജയിച്ചത്. ഇത് രണ്ടാം തവണയാണ് അദ്ദേഹം കൗണ്‍സിലറാകുന്നത്.

കഴിഞ്ഞ അഞ്ചു വര്‍ഷം കോര്‍പ്പറേഷനിലെ അഴിമതികള്‍ക്കെതിരെ ശക്തമായ പോരാട്ടം നയിച്ചതാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ മേയര്‍ സ്ഥാനത്തേക്ക് എത്തിക്കുന്നതില്‍ നിര്‍ണ്ണായകമായത്.

തിരുവനന്തപുരം നഗരത്തിന്റെ വികസനത്തിനായി മോദി സര്‍ക്കാരിന്റെ മാതൃക പിന്തുടരുമെന്നും, തെരുവുനായ ശല്യം പരിഹരിക്കുക, നഗരത്തിലെ മാലിന്യ പ്രശ്‌നങ്ങള്‍ തീര്‍ക്കുക തുടങ്ങിയവയ്ക്കാണ് മുന്‍ഗണനയെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം സ്ഥാനമേറ്റെടുത്ത ശേഷം പ്രതികരിച്ചു.

നാല് പതിറ്റാണ്ടായി നിലനിന്നിരുന്ന ഇടതുപക്ഷ ഭരണത്തിന് അറുതി വരുത്തിയാണ് തിരുവനന്തപുരം കോര്‍പ്പറേഷനില്‍ ബിജെപി ഭരണത്തിലെത്തുന്നത്. കേരളത്തിലെ ഒരു കോര്‍പ്പറേഷനില്‍ ബിജെപി അധികാരത്തിലെത്തുന്നത് ആദ്യമായാണ്.

ബിജെപി സംസ്ഥാന സെക്രട്ടറിയും മുന്‍ ജില്ലാ പ്രസിഡന്റുമായ വി.വി. രാജേഷിന്റെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ പരിചയം ഭരണത്തിന് ഗുണകരമാകുമെന്ന് പാര്‍ട്ടി വിലയിരുത്തി. എല്‍ഡിഎഫ്, യുഡിഎഫ് മുന്നണികളില്‍ നിന്ന് കരുത്തരായ നേതാക്കള്‍ കൗണ്‍സിലിലെത്തിയ സാഹചര്യത്തില്‍ അവരെ നേരിടാന്‍ രാജേഷിന്റെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ മികവ് അനിവാര്യമാണെന്ന് ആര്‍എസ്എസ് നേതൃത്വവും നിലപാടെടുത്തു.

Summary: As a BJP-led administration takes charge of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation for the first time in history, senior leader V.V. Rajesh has been chosen to lead the council. Rajesh ascended to the Mayor's post with 51 votes in the election held today.

In the council meeting held on Friday morning, M.R. Gopan proposed V.V. Rajesh's name, which was seconded by V.G. Girikumar. Rajesh secured the Mayoralty by gaining the necessary support for an absolute majority from Pattoor Radhakrishnan, who won as an independent candidate.

The LDF fielded R.P. Sivaji, while the UDF fielded former MLA K.S. Sabarinadhan for the Mayor’s post. In the 101-member council, the BJP won 50 seats. With Radhakrishnan pledging his support to the BJP, the party reached the "magic number" of 51 required to secure governance.

G.S. Asha Nath, who won from the Karumam ward, is the candidate contesting for the Deputy Mayor's post.

Though there were initial reports that former DGP R. Sreelekha might be considered for the Mayor's post, the party finally decided on V.V. Rajesh following strong support from a section of the party and the RSS. There are indications that Sreelekha may be considered for the upcoming Assembly elections or as the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women. G.S. Asha Nath was selected for the Deputy Mayor post after Sreelekha declined the role.

V.V. Rajesh is currently a BJP State Secretary. He has previously served as the BJP Thiruvananthapuram District President and the State President of Yuva Morcha. He won this election from the Kodunganoor ward, marking his second term as a councillor.

His leadership in spearheading protests against corruption in the Corporation over the last five years was a decisive factor in his elevation to the Mayor's post.

After taking charge, Rajesh stated that he would follow the Modi Government's model for the development of Thiruvananthapuram. His top priorities include finding a permanent solution to the city's waste management issues.

The BJP is coming to power in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation by ending four decades of Left-wing (LDF) rule. This marks the first time the BJP has gained power in a Municipal Corporation in Kerala.

The party leadership assessed that the political experience of V.V. Rajesh would be highly beneficial for governance. Furthermore, the RSS leadership took the stance that Rajesh’s political acumen is essential to counter the formidable leaders from the LDF and UDF who have entered the council this term.
