Pala Municipality Moves to UDF Rule; 21-Year-Old Diya Binu Pulickakandam to Become Chairperson
കോട്ടയം: രാഷ്ട്രീയ അനിശ്ചിതത്വങ്ങള്ക്കും നാടകീയ നീക്കങ്ങള്ക്കും ഒടുവില് പാലാ നഗരസഭയുടെ ഭരണം യു.ഡി.എഫിന്. ഒത്തുതീര്പ്പിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി സ്വതന്ത്രയായി മത്സരിച്ചു ജയിച്ച 21 കാരി ദിയാ ബിനു പുളിക്കക്കണ്ടം ആദ്യ ടേമില് നഗരസഭാദ്ധ്യക്ഷയാവും.
21ാം വയസ്സില് പാലാ നഗരസഭയുടെ അധ്യക്ഷ പദവിയിലെത്തുന്നതിലൂടെ രാജ്യത്തെ തന്നെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രായം കുറഞ്ഞ നഗരസഭാ അധ്യക്ഷമാരില് ഒരാളായി ദിയ മാറും.
തദ്ദേശ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പില് ദിയാ ബിനുവിനോടൊപ്പം പിതാവ് അഡ്വ. ബിനു പുളിക്കക്കണ്ടം, അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സഹോദരന് ബിജു പുളിക്കക്കണ്ടം എന്നിവരും സ്വതന്ത്രരായി മത്സരിച്ച് വിജയിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഒരു കുടുംബത്തില് നിന്ന് മൂന്ന് പേര് സ്വതന്ത്രരായി വിജയിച്ചത് പാലാ നഗരസഭയുടെ ചരിത്രത്തില് ആദ്യമായാണ്.
ആര്ക്കും ഭൂരിപക്ഷമില്ലാതിരുന്ന നഗരസഭയില് പുളിക്കക്കണ്ടം കുടുംബം യു.ഡി.എഫിന് പിന്തുണ നല്കാന് തീരുമാനിച്ചതോടെയാണ് ഭരണം മാറിയത്. ഈ പിന്തുണയ്ക്ക് പകരമായി ആദ്യ ടേമില് ദിയാ ബിനുവിനെ നഗരസഭാ അധ്യക്ഷയാക്കാന് യു.ഡി.എഫ് സമ്മതിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.
മദ്രാസ് ക്രിസ്ത്യന് കോളേജില് നിന്ന് സാമ്പത്തിക ശാസ്ത്രത്തില് ബിരുദം നേടിയ ദിയ, എം.ബി.എ പഠനത്തിന് തയ്യാറെടുക്കുന്നതിനിടെയാണ് രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിലേക്ക് എത്തിയത്. കേരള കോണ്ഗ്രസ് (എം) - സി.പി.എം മുന്നണിയുടെ പക്കല് നിന്ന് ഭരണം പിടിച്ചെടുക്കാന് ദിയയുടെയും കുടുംബത്തിന്റെയും പിന്തുണ യു.ഡി.എഫിനെ സഹായിച്ചു. ഇതോടെ വര്ഷങ്ങള്ക്ക് ശേഷം കേരള കോണ്ഗ്രസ് (എം) പാലാ നഗരസഭയില് പ്രതിപക്ഷത്തായി.
കേരള കോണ്ഗ്രസ് (എം) എല്.ഡി.എഫിന്റെ ഭാഗമായതോടെ പാലാ നഗരസഭയില് ശക്തമായ സ്വാധീനമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. എന്നാല് നഗരസഭയ്ക്കുള്ളിലെ തര്ക്കങ്ങളും വിട്ടുപോക്കുകളും യു.ഡി.എഫിന് അനുകൂലമായ സാഹചര്യമൊരുക്കി. കഴിഞ്ഞ തവണ എല്.ഡി.എഫ് മുന്നണിയിലെ ധാരണകള് പ്രകാരം ചെയര്മാന് സ്ഥാനം മാറിയപ്പോള് ഉണ്ടായ തര്ക്കങ്ങളാണ് ജിജിയെ മുന്നണിയില് നിന്ന് അകറ്റിയത്. വോട്ടെടുപ്പില് ജിജി പുളിക്കക്കണ്ടം യു.ഡി.എഫിന് അനുകൂലമായി വോട്ട് ചെയ്തതോടെ എല്.ഡി.എഫിന് അധികാരം നഷ്ടമായി. ആകെ 26 അംഗങ്ങളുള്ള നഗരസഭയില് യു.ഡി.എഫ് സ്ഥാനാര്ത്ഥി ഷാജു തുരുത്തന് 14 വോട്ടുകള് നേടിയാണ് ചെയര്മാനായി തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടത്. എല്.ഡി.എഫ് സ്ഥാനാര്ത്ഥി ബിനു പുളിക്കക്കണ്ടത്തിന് അന്ന് 12 വോട്ടുകള് മാത്രമേ ലഭിച്ചുള്ളൂ.
ജിജി പുളിക്കക്കണ്ടം തന്റെ കുടുംബത്തോടൊപ്പം യു.ഡി.എഫിനെ പിന്തുണയ്ക്കാന് തീരുമാനിച്ചത് പാലായിലെ കേരള കോണ്ഗ്രസ് (എം) രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിന് കനത്ത തിരിച്ചടിയായി. നഗരസഭയില് നടന്ന മര്ദ്ദനവും വ്യക്തിപരമായ അധിക്ഷേപങ്ങളും തന്നെ ഈ തീരുമാനത്തിലേക്ക് നയിച്ചുവെന്ന് ജിജി മാധ്യമങ്ങളോട് പ്രതികരിച്ചിരുന്നു.
പാലായിലെ തോല്വി എല്.ഡി.എഫിനുള്ളിലെ സി.പി.എം - കേരള കോണ്ഗ്രസ് (എം) ബന്ധത്തില് വിള്ളലുകള് വീഴ്ത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. വോട്ട് ചോര്ച്ചയെക്കുറിച്ച് ഇരു പാര്ട്ടികളും പരസ്പരം പഴിചാരുകയാണ്.
പത്തു വര്ഷത്തിന് ശേഷമാണ് പാലാ നഗരസഭയില് യു.ഡി.എഫ് ഭരണം തിരിച്ചുപിടിക്കുന്നത്. കേരള കോണ്ഗ്രസ് (എം) എല്.ഡി.എഫിലേക്ക് പോയതിന് ശേഷം യു.ഡി.എഫിന് ലഭിക്കുന്ന ഏറ്റവും വലിയ രാഷ്ട്രീയ വിജയമാണിത്. കെ.എം. മാണിയുടെ കോട്ടയായിരുന്ന പാലായില് കേരള കോണ്ഗ്രസിനെ (എം) തളച്ച് ഭരണം പിടിക്കാന് കഴിഞ്ഞത് യു.ഡി.എഫിന് വരാനിരിക്കുന്ന തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പുകളില് വലിയ ആത്മവിശ്വാസം നല്കുന്നു.

In the local body elections, Diya Binu won as an independent candidate alongside her father, Adv. Binu Pulickakandam, and his brother, Biju Pulickakandam. This marks the first time in the history of the Pala Municipality that three members of the same family have won as independents.
The shift in power occurred after the Pulickakandam family decided to support the UDF in a council where no single party had a clear majority. In exchange for this support, the UDF agreed to appoint Diya Binu as the Chairperson for the first term.
Diya, a graduate in Economics from Madras Christian College, entered politics while preparing for her MBA studies. The support from Diya and her family was instrumental for the UDF in capturing power from the LDF (KC(M)-CPM) alliance. Consequently, after many years, the Kerala Congress (M) will now sit in the opposition in the Pala Municipality.
The Kerala Congress (M) had held significant influence in the municipality since joining the LDF. However, internal disputes and defections within the council created a favorable situation for the UDF. Disputes that arose during the previous term’s chairmanship handover—as per LDF internal agreements—alienated Jiji Pulickakandam from the alliance. When Jiji voted in favor of the UDF, the LDF lost its hold on power. In the 26-member council, the UDF candidate, Shaju Thuruthan, was previously elected chairman with 14 votes, while the LDF candidate, Binu Pulickakandam, received only 12.
The decision of Jiji Pulickakandam and his family to support the UDF dealt a heavy blow to Kerala Congress (M) politics in Pala. Jiji had told the media that physical assaults and personal insults directed at him within the municipality led him to this decision.
The defeat in Pala has caused rifts in the CPM-Kerala Congress (M) relationship within the LDF, with both parties blaming each other for the vote leak.
The UDF is regaining control of the Pala Municipality after ten years. This is the biggest political victory for the UDF since the Kerala Congress (M) moved to the LDF. Successfully pinning down the Kerala Congress (M) in its stronghold—once the bastion of K.M. Mani—provides the UDF with significant confidence for upcoming elections.
