ഓട്ടാവ : ഹൃദയാഘാതത്തെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് കാനഡയിലെ ആശുപത്രിയില്‍ എട്ടു മണിക്കൂറുകളോളം ചികിത്സയ്ക്കായി കാത്തിരുന്ന ഇന്ത്യന്‍ വംശജനായ പ്രശാന്ത് ശ്രീകുമാര്‍ (44) ന് ദാരുണാന്ത്യം.

ഡിസംബര്‍ 22-ന് ജോലിസ്ഥലത്ത് വച്ച് കഠിനമായ നെഞ്ചുവേദന അനുഭവപ്പെട്ടതിനെത്തുടര്‍ന്നാണ് പ്രശാന്ത് ശ്രീകുമാറിനെ എഡ്മന്റണിലെ ഗ്രേ നണ്‍സ് കമ്മ്യൂണിറ്റി ഹോസ്പിറ്റലില്‍ എത്തിച്ചത്. മൂന്ന് കുട്ടികളുടെ പിതാവായ പ്രശാന്ത് എട്ട് മണിക്കൂറിലധികം എമര്‍ജന്‍സി റൂമിലെ വെയിറ്റിംഗ് ഏരിയയില്‍ ചികിത്സയൊന്നും ലഭിക്കാതെ കാത്തിരിക്കേണ്ടി വന്നു. ഇത് കാനഡയിലെ അടിയന്തര ആരോഗ്യ പരിരക്ഷാ സംവിധാനങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് വലിയ ചോദ്യങ്ങള്‍ ഉയര്‍ത്തുന്ന സംഭവമായി മാറിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.

നെഞ്ചുവേദനയെക്കുറിച്ച് പ്രശാന്ത് പരാതിപ്പെട്ടപ്പോള്‍ ഒരു ക്ലയന്റ് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ആശുപത്രിയില്‍ എത്തിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. അവിടെ പ്രാഥമിക പരിശോധനകള്‍ക്ക്  ശേഷം വെയിറ്റിംഗ് റൂമിലിരിക്കാന്‍ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. പ്രശാന്തിന്റെ പിതാവ് കുമാര്‍ ശ്രീകുമാര്‍ ഉടന്‍ തന്നെ ആശുപത്രിയിലെത്തി. 'പപ്പാ, എനിക്ക് ഈ വേദന സഹിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയുന്നില്ല,' എന്ന് പ്രശാന്ത് തന്നോട് പറഞ്ഞതായി കുമാര്‍ ശ്രീകുമാര്‍ വെളിപ്പെടുത്തി.

വേദന അതികഠിനമാണെന്ന് പ്രശാന്ത് ആശുപത്രി ജീവനക്കാരോട് പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. ഇതിനുപിന്നാലെ ഇസിജി  എടുത്തു പരിശോധിച്ചെങ്കിലും കാര്യമായ പ്രശ്‌നങ്ങളൊന്നുമില്ലെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ് അധികൃതര്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ വീണ്ടും കാത്തിരിക്കാന്‍ വിടുകയായിരുന്നു. സമയം കടന്നുപോയപ്പോള്‍ വേദനയ്ക്കായി ടൈലനോള്‍ ഗുളിക നല്‍കിയതല്ലാതെ മറ്റ് ചികിത്സകളൊന്നും ലഭിച്ചില്ല. ഇതിനിടയില്‍ പ്രശാന്തിന്റെ രക്തസമ്മര്‍ദ്ദം ക്രമാതീതമായി വര്‍ദ്ധിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.

എട്ട് മണിക്കൂര്‍ നീണ്ട കാത്തിരിപ്പിനൊടുവില്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ചികിത്സാ വിഭാഗത്തിലേക്ക് വിളിപ്പിച്ചു. 'അവിടെ ചെന്ന് പത്ത് സെക്കന്‍ഡ് ഇരുന്നതേയുള്ളൂ, അവന്‍ എന്നെ നോക്കി എഴുന്നേറ്റു നെഞ്ചില്‍ കൈവെച്ച് പെട്ടെന്ന് കുഴഞ്ഞുവീണു,' കുമാര്‍ ശ്രീകുമാര്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. നഴ്‌സുമാര്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ രക്ഷിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചെങ്കിലും അപ്പോഴേക്കും മരണം സംഭവിച്ചിരുന്നു. 

സംഭവത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് അന്വേഷണം നടക്കുകയാണെന്ന് ആശുപത്രി അധികൃതരും കനേഡിയന്‍ ആരോഗ്യ വുകുപ്പും അറിയിച്ചു. ഭാര്യ രശ്മിയും മൂന്ന്, പത്ത്, പതിനാല് വയസ്സുള്ള മൂന്ന് കുട്ടികളും അടങ്ങുന്നതാണ് പ്രശാന്തിന്റെ കുടുംബം. 

കാനഡയിലെ ആരോഗ്യരംഗത്തെ അടിയന്തര സേവനങ്ങളുടെ കാലതാമസം ഈ സംഭവത്തോടെ വീണ്ടും ചര്‍ച്ചയായിരിക്കുകയാണ്. 

പ്രശാന്ത് ശ്രീകുമാറിന്റെ പിതാവ് കുമാര്‍ ശ്രീകുമാറും കുടുംബവും വര്‍ഷങ്ങളായി കാനഡയില്‍ സ്ഥിരതാമസക്കാരാണ്. കാനഡയിലെ മലയാളി അസോസിയേഷനുകളും ഇന്ത്യന്‍ കമ്മ്യൂണിറ്റിയും ഈ സംഭവത്തില്‍ കടുത്ത പ്രതിഷേധത്തിലാണ്. എഡ്മന്റണ്‍ മലയാളി അസോസിയേഷന്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടെയുള്ള സംഘടനകള്‍ കുടുംബത്തിന് പിന്തുണയുമായി രംഗത്തെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. കാനഡയിലെ ആരോഗ്യ സംവിധാനങ്ങളിലെ അമിതമായ തിരക്കും കാത്തിരിപ്പ് സമയവും കുറയ്ക്കണമെന്ന ആവശ്യം ഇതോടെ ശക്തമായിട്ടുണ്ട്.

On December 22, Prashant Sreekumar was rushed to the Grey Nuns Community Hospital in Edmonton after experiencing severe chest pain while at work. Prashant, a father of three, had to wait in the emergency room's waiting area for over eight hours without receiving medical attention. This incident has raised serious questions regarding Canada's emergency healthcare response systems.

When Prashant complained of chest pain, a client drove him to the hospital. After initial triage assessments, he was asked to sit in the waiting room. Prashant’s father, Kumar Sreekumar, arrived at the hospital shortly after. "Papa, I cannot bear this pain," Prashant told his father.

Prashant had informed the hospital staff that his pain was excruciating. Although an ECG was performed, the authorities informed him that there were no significant issues and sent him back to the waiting area. As time passed, he was only given Tylenol for the pain, while his blood pressure continued to rise alarmingly.

Finally, after an eight-hour wait, he was called into the treatment area. "He had only been sitting there for about ten seconds when he looked at me, stood up, clutched his chest, and suddenly collapsed," said Kumar Sreekumar. Although nurses attempted to resuscitate him, he had already passed away.

Hospital authorities and the Canadian Health Department announced that an investigation into the incident is underway. Prashant is survived by his wife, Rashmi, and three children aged three, ten, and fourteen.

This incident has once again sparked a debate regarding the long wait times for emergency services in the Canadian healthcare system. Although Kumar Sreekumar and his family have been long-time residents of Canada, they maintained close ties with Kerala.

Malayali associations in Canada and the Indian community have expressed strong protest over the incident. Organizations, including the Edmonton Malayali Association, have come forward to support the family. Following this tragedy, demands to reduce excessive crowding and wait times in the Canadian healthcare system have intensified.
