ഇന്ത്യയുടെ പതിവ് ഓപ്പണര്‍മാരായ സഞ്ജു സാംസണും അഭിഷേക് ശര്‍മ്മയുമാണ് ഇന്നിംഗ്‌സ് ഓപ്പണ്‍ ചെയ്തത്. ഏറെ പ്രതീക്ഷയോടെ കാത്തിരുന്ന വൈഭവ് സൂര്യവംശിയുടെ അരങ്ങേറ്റം ഈ മത്സരത്തില്‍ ഉണ്ടായില്ല. ക്രീസിലെത്തിയ സഞ്ജുവിന് വെറും നാല് പന്തുകള്‍ മാത്രമേ നേരിടാന്‍ സാധിച്ചുള്ളൂ. ജയ് മുന്ദ്രയുടെ പന്തില്‍ പുറത്താകുന്നതിന് മുന്‍പ് 5 റണ്‍സ് മാത്രമാണ് സഞ്ജുവിന് നേടാനായത്. വൈഭവ് സൂര്യവംശി തന്റെ അവസരത്തിനായി കാത്തിരിക്കുകയാണെന്നും, അതിനാല്‍ സഞ്ജുവിന് കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ അത്ര നിസ്സാരമായി കാണാനാകില്ലെന്നും മഞ്ജരേക്കര്‍ വ്യക്തമാക്കി.

എന്നിരുന്നാലും, സൂര്യവംശി പ്ലെയിങ് ഇലവനില്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍ പോലും മത്സരഫലത്തില്‍ വലിയ മാറ്റമൊന്നും ഉണ്ടാകുമായിരുന്നില്ലെന്നും മഞ്ജരേക്കര്‍ ചൂണ്ടിക്കാണിച്ചു. ഇന്ത്യയ്ക്ക് മുന്നിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ലക്ഷ്യം വളരെ വലുതായിരുന്നുവെന്നും അവിടത്തെ സാഹചര്യങ്ങള്‍ ഇന്ത്യയ്ക്ക് അനുകൂലമായിരുന്നില്ലെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു.

'അഭിഷേക് ചെയ്തതിനേക്കാള്‍ അല്പം കൂടി മെച്ചപ്പെട്ട പ്രകടനം ഒരുപക്ഷേ സൂര്യവംശി കാഴ്ചവെക്കുമായിരുന്നിരിക്കാം. ആദ്യ ആറ് ഓവറുകളില്‍ തന്നെ പരമാവധി റണ്‍സ് കണ്ടെത്തേണ്ട ഒരു റണ്‍ ചേസ് ആയിരുന്നു അത്. ബാക്കി ഓവറുകളിലും ആ വേഗം നിലനിര്‍ത്തണമായിരുന്നു. ചേസിംഗ് കുറച്ചുകൂടി എളുപ്പമാക്കാന്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് സാധിക്കുമായിരുന്നിരിക്കാം, പക്ഷേ ലക്ഷ്യം വളരെ വലുതായിരുന്നു. സാഹചര്യങ്ങള്‍ ഒട്ടും എളുപ്പമായിരുന്നില്ല. ദാംബുള്ളയിലെ ട്രൈ-സീരീസിലും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് അത്ര എളുപ്പത്തില്‍ സിക്‌സറുകള്‍ നേടാന്‍ സാധിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല എന്ന് നമ്മള്‍ കണ്ടതാണ്,' മഞ്ജരേക്കര്‍ കൂട്ടിച്ചേര്‍ത്തു.

"Sanju Samson needs to be careful because Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is breathing down his and Abhishek Sharma's neck," Manjrekar said while speaking on the Sony Sports Network.

However, Manjrekar also pointed out that even if Sooryavanshi had been in the playing XI, it wouldn't have made a massive difference to the match result. He mentioned that the target before India was too big and the conditions there were not favorable for the team.

"Perhaps Sooryavanshi might have performed slightly better than what Abhishek did. It was a run chase where maximum runs had to be found in the first six overs itself. That momentum had to be maintained in the remaining overs as well. He might have been able to make the chase a bit easier, but the target was too big. The conditions were not easy at all. We saw in the tri-series in Dambulla as well that hitting sixes wasn't that easy for him," Manjrekar added.

India suffered an unexpected 34-run defeat to Ireland in the first T20I of the two-match series held at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast. This marks India's first-ever defeat against Ireland in the T20 format after a streak of eight consecutive wins.
