Nepotism Controversy: Electricity Minister Sunny Joseph's Brother-in-Law Benny Thomas Resigns

തിരുവനന്തപുരം: വൈദ്യുതി വകുപ്പ് മന്ത്രി സണ്ണി ജോസഫിന്റെ അഡിഷണല്‍ പ്രൈവറ്റ് സെക്രട്ടറി സ്ഥാനത്തു നിന്ന് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സഹോദരീ ഭര്‍ത്താവ് ബെന്നി തോമസ് രാജി വച്ചു. ബന്ധു നിമയമന വിവാദത്തെ തുടര്‍ന്നാണ് രാജി.

കണ്ണൂര്‍ ഡിസിസി ജനറല്‍ സെക്രട്ടറിയും മന്ത്രിയുടെ സഹോദരി ഭര്‍ത്താവുമായ ബെന്നി തോമസിന്റെ നിയമനം വലിയ രാഷ്ട്രീയ വിവാദത്തിനു വഴിവച്ചിരുന്നു. 

മന്ത്രിയുടെ അളിയനെ പേഴ്സണല്‍ സ്റ്റാഫില്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടുത്തിയത് നഗ്‌നമായ ബന്ധുനിയമനമാണെന്ന് ആരോപിച്ച് സിപിഎംരംഗത്തെത്തുകയായിരുന്നു. നിയമസഭയ്ക്കുള്ളിലും പുറത്തും ഡിവൈഎഫ്‌ഐ  ഉള്‍പ്പെടെയുള്ള സംഘടനകള്‍ ഇതിനെതിരെ ശക്തമായ പ്രതിഷേധം രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുകയും മന്ത്രിയുടെ രാജി ആവശ്യപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു.  

വിവാദം ഉയര്‍ന്ന ആദ്യ ഘട്ടങ്ങളില്‍ മന്ത്രി സണ്ണി ജോസഫും കെ. മുരളീധരന്‍ അടക്കമുള്ള മുതിര്‍ന്ന കോണ്‍ഗ്രസ് നേതാക്കളും നിയമനത്തെ ശക്തമായി ന്യായീകരിച്ചിരുന്നു. ബെന്നി തോമസ് വെറുമൊരു ബന്ധു മാത്രമല്ല, ദീര്‍ഘകാലമായി പൊതുരംഗത്തുള്ള വ്യക്തിയും മുന്‍പ് പഞ്ചായത്ത് പ്രസിഡന്റായി മികച്ച രീതിയില്‍ സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ച നേതാവുമാണെന്നു സണ്ണി ജോസഫ് പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നു.

കണ്ണൂര്‍ ഡിസിസി പ്രസിഡന്റ് ഔദ്യോഗികമായി ശുപാര്‍ശ ചെയ്തതിനാലാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ നിയമിച്ചത്. കൂടാതെ കഴിഞ്ഞ നിയമസഭാ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പില്‍ പേരവൂര്‍ മണ്ഡലത്തില്‍ മന്ത്രിയുടെ ചീഫ് ഇലക്ഷന്‍ ഏജന്റായും ബെന്നി പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചിരുന്നു.

നിയമനത്തില്‍ യാതൊരുവിധ നിയമവിരുദ്ധതയോ ഒളിച്ചുകളിയോ ഇല്ലെന്നും പൂര്‍ണ്ണമായ സുതാര്യതയോടെയാണ് സ്റ്റാഫില്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടുത്തിയതെന്നും മന്ത്രി വ്യക്തമാക്കിയിരുന്നു. മന്ത്രി ന്യായീകരണങ്ങളുമായി മുന്നോട്ട് പോയെങ്കിലും പ്രതിപക്ഷം ഈ വിഷയം നിയമസഭയില്‍ വലിയ ആയുധമാക്കി മാറ്റി. യുഡിഎഫ് മുന്‍പ് ഉന്നയിച്ചിരുന്ന ധാര്‍മ്മിക നിലപാടുകളെ ചോദ്യം ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ട് എല്‍ഡിഎഫ് വലിയ രീതിയില്‍ രാഷ്ട്രീയ പ്രതിരോധം തീര്‍ത്തു.

ഇതിനെത്തുടര്‍ന്ന് പേഴ്സണല്‍ സ്റ്റാഫ് നിയമനങ്ങളില്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ ജാഗ്രത പുലര്‍ത്തണമായിരുന്നു എന്ന് കോണ്‍ഗ്രസ് സംസ്ഥാന നേതൃത്വം മന്ത്രിയെ അറിയിക്കുകയും, പാര്‍ട്ടിക്കും മുന്നണിക്കും കൂടുതല്‍ രാഷ്ട്രീയ ദോഷം ഉണ്ടാകാതിരിക്കാന്‍ ബെന്നി തോമസിനോട് രാജി വെക്കാന്‍ നേതൃത്വം നിര്‍ദ്ദേശിക്കുകയുമായിരുന്നു. തുടര്‍ന്ന് ബെന്നി തോമസ് തന്റെ രാജിക്കത്ത് മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിക്കു കൈമാറുകയായിരുന്നു.

Summary: Benny Thomas, the brother-in-law of Electricity Minister Sunny Joseph, has resigned from his position as the Minister's Additional Private Secretary. The resignation comes in the wake of the raging nepotism controversy.

The appointment of Benny Thomas, who is the Kannur DCC General Secretary and the Minister's brother-in-law, had triggered a major political row.

The CPI(M) came forward alleging that appointing the Minister's brother-in-law to the personal staff was a blatant act of nepotism. Organizations including the DYFI staged strong protests both inside and outside the Legislative Assembly, demanding the Minister's resignation.

In the initial stages of the controversy, Minister Sunny Joseph and senior Congress leaders, including K. Muraleedharan, strongly justified the appointment. Sunny Joseph had stated that Benny Thomas was not just a relative, but a person who has been in public service for a long time and a leader who had previously served excellently as a Panchayat President.

The Minister had also pointed out that the appointment was made based on an official recommendation by the Kannur DCC President. Furthermore, Benny had served as the Minister's Chief Election Agent in the Peravoor constituency during the last Assembly elections.

The Minister maintained that there was no illegality or secrecy involved in the appointment and that he was inducted into the staff with complete transparency. Although the Minister continued to justify the move, the Opposition turned this issue into a major political weapon in the Assembly. The LDF mounted a strong political counter-offensive, questioning the moral stances previously raised by the UDF.

Following this, the Congress state leadership informed the Minister that greater caution should have been exercised regarding personal staff appointments. To prevent further political damage to the party and the front, the leadership directed Benny Thomas to step down. Consequently, Benny Thomas submitted his resignation letter to the Chief Minister.
