News in English:
Climate experts have pointed out that the increasing frequency of lightning strikes during Kerala's post-monsoon (North-East Monsoon) season is turning into a major climate disaster. Experts explain that the primary reasons for this fatal phenomenon are the presence of moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal, high atmospheric temperatures, and local instability.
North-easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal bring abundant moisture into Kerala. As this moisture fills the lower layers of the atmosphere, daytime heat warms the air and causes it to rise. The combination of warm air and cool, moist air creates atmospheric instability, which gives rise to thunderclouds accompanied by intense lightning.
Friction between water droplets and ice crystals inside these clouds generates strong electrical charges. Positive charges concentrate at the top of the cloud and negative charges at the bottom, which interact with surface charges on the earth to trigger massive electrical currents. Kerala’s topography also helps such clouds form rapidly.
Alarming Statistics and Impacts
According to October data, Kottayam district has recorded the highest number of lightning strikes in the state. Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, and Pathanamthitta districts are the other major areas following closely behind in lightning vulnerability.
Farmers and laborers working in fields and open spaces make up the majority of those killed by lightning. Additionally, electronic home appliances, KSEB (Kerala State Electricity Board) lines, and transformers being damaged—leading to power outages—are common occurrences.
Key Precautions to Follow
Follow Advisory Warnings: Take the 'Lightning Alert' warnings issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the State Disaster Management Authority seriously.
Avoid Open Spaces: As soon as dark clouds begin to form, immediately move inside a safe building. Completely avoid standing under trees or parking vehicles beneath them.
Stay Safe Outdoors: If you are caught in the open, crouch down into a ball-like position with your feet together, head tucked between your knees, minimizing your body's contact area with the ground. Never lie flat on your back.
Protect Electronic Devices: Unplug electronic devices before lightning becomes severe. However, do not touch them while lightning is active. Also avoid touching taps, pipes, and plumbing fixtures.
Inside Vehicles: Staying inside a closed vehicle—without touching metal frames or open windows—is safe. However, avoid traveling on bicycles, motorcycles, and tractors.
Other Instructions: Immediately stop fishing, boating, and swimming. Move domestic animals from under trees to safe, covered sheds.
Authorities have issued a strict warning to never lower your guard, as lightning may not always be preceded by visible flashes of light at its onset.
