'അദ്ദേഹം ചെറുപ്പത്തില്‍ തന്നെ സ്പൈസ് ജെറ്റില്‍ ഫസ്റ്റ് ഓഫീസറായി കരിയര്‍ ആരംഭിച്ചു. അന്നു തന്നെ വളരെ കഴിവുള്ള ഒരു ചെറുപ്പക്കാരനായിരുന്നു. തന്റെ കഴിവും പ്രവീണ്യവും കൊണ്ട് അദ്ദേഹം ക്യാപ്റ്റനായി സ്ഥാനക്കയറ്റം നേടി. ക്യാപ്റ്റന്‍ പദവിയില്‍ എത്തിയതിന് ശേഷം അദ്ദേഹം ട്രെയിനറായി മാറുകയും, മറ്റു പൈലറ്റുമാര്‍ക്കും കോ-പൈലറ്റുമാര്‍ക്കും ക്യാപ്റ്റന്‍മാര്‍ക്കും പരിശീലനം നല്‍കുകയും ചെയ്തു,' പട്ടേല്‍ പറഞ്ഞു.

'വിമാനം പറത്തുമ്പോള്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തോടൊപ്പം പലപ്പോഴും ഞാന്‍ കോക്ക്പിറ്റ് പങ്കുവച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് എപ്പോഴും ഒരു പ്ലാന്‍ ബി ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. പൈലറ്റുമാര്‍ക്ക് അതിനായുള്ള പരിശീലനം ലഭിക്കാറുണ്ട്. എന്നാല്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മനസ്സില്‍ ഒരു പ്ലാന്‍ സി കൂടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഏത് വിഷയത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുമുള്ള അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കാഴ്ചപ്പാടും, വിമാനം വളരെ ഉയര്‍ന്ന വേഗത്തില്‍ പറക്കുമ്പോള്‍ അടുത്ത നിമിഷത്തില്‍ എന്ത് സംഭവിക്കുമെന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ചിന്തയും തികച്ചും വ്യത്യസ്തമായിരുന്നു,' അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു.

വിമാനം രക്ഷിക്കാനും സഹപൈലറ്റുമായി പോരാടാനും ശ്രമിക്കുന്നതിനിടയില്‍, ഹൈജാക്കിങ് അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ അടിയന്തര സാഹചര്യങ്ങള്‍ അറിയിക്കാനുള്ള അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര ഡിസ്‌ട്രെസ് കോഡായ 7700 സന്ദേശം അയക്കുന്നത് എത്രത്തോളം ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടായിരുന്നു എന്ന ചോദ്യത്തിന്, ആ സമയത്തെ മച്ചാറിന്റെ മനസ്സാന്നിധ്യം 'പ്രശംസനീയം' ആയിരുന്നു എന്ന് പട്ടേല്‍ മറുപടി നല്‍കി.

സ്മിത് മച്ചാറിന്റെ ധീരതയ്ക്ക് 'വിശിഷ്ട് ഗുജറാത്ത് ഗരിമ അവാര്‍ഡ്' നല്‍കി ആദരിക്കുമെന്ന് ഗുജറാത്ത് സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു. 'ഇസ്രായേലിലേക്ക് പുറപ്പെട്ട വിമാനത്തിലെ പൈലറ്റായ ക്യാപ്റ്റന്‍ സ്മിത് മച്ചാറിന്റെ ധീരതയെ ഇന്ന് ലോകം മുഴുവന്‍ സല്യൂട്ട് ചെയ്യുകയാണ്. ആക്രമണത്തില്‍ രക്തത്തില്‍ കുളിച്ചിട്ടും, 174 യാത്രക്കാരുടെ ജീവന്‍ രക്ഷിക്കാന്‍ അദ്ദേഹം സമാനതകളില്ലാത്ത ധീരത കാട്ടി. ഇത് ഏറെ പ്രചോദനകരവും പ്രശംസനീയവുമാണ്,' എന്ന് ഗുജറാത്ത് മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി ഭൂപേന്ദ്ര പട്ടേല്‍ എക്സില്‍ കുറിച്ചു.

'ഗുജറാത്തിന്റെ ഈ ധീരപുത്രന്‍ ഗുജറാത്ത് സംസ്ഥാനത്തിനും രാജ്യത്തിനും ലോകമെമ്പാടും പെരുമ തന്നിരിക്കുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഞരമ്പുകളില്‍ ഒഴുകുന്ന ഗുജറാത്തി വീര്യം നമ്മെയെല്ലാം വലിയ അഭിമാനത്താല്‍ നിറയ്ക്കുന്നു,' എന്നും അദ്ദേഹം കൂട്ടിച്ചേര്‍ത്തു.

കോക്ക്പിറ്റില്‍ ആക്രമണത്തിനിരയായതോടെ, രണ്ട് മിനിറ്റില്‍ താഴെ സമയം കൊണ്ട് 14,000 മുതല്‍ 17,000 അടിയോളം താഴേക്ക് വിമാനം പതിച്ചു. ഒരു ഘട്ടത്തില്‍ 60 സെക്കന്‍ഡിനുള്ളില്‍ 14,000 അടി താഴ്ചയിലേക്ക് പതിച്ചു. വിമാനത്തിന്റെ കണ്‍ട്രോള്‍ സര്‍ഫസുകളിലും ടെയില്‍ റഡ്ഡറിലും ഗുരുതരമായ മാനുവല്‍ ഇടപെടലോ സിസ്റ്റം മാനിപ്പുലേഷനോ നടന്നതായി ഫ്‌ലൈറ്റ്-ട്രാക്കിംഗ് ഡാറ്റ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

വിമാനത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് അപായ സൂചന വന്നതിനു പിന്നാലെ ഇസ്രയേലി വ്യോമസേനയുടെ യുദ്ധവിമാനങ്ങള്‍ ഈ വിമാനത്തിനടുത്തേക്കു കുതിച്ചിരുന്നു. 

യാത്രക്കാരും ഡ്യൂട്ടിയിലില്ലാതിരുന്ന ക്രൂ അംഗങ്ങളും കോക്ക്പിറ്റിലേക്ക് കയറിയാണ് അക്രമിയെ കീഴടക്കിയത്. ഡ്യൂട്ടി കഴിഞ്ഞ് ഇതേ വിമാനത്തില്‍ യാത്ര ചെയ്തിരുന്ന ഫ്‌ലൈ ദുബായ് ക്രൂ അംഗങ്ങളും, യാനിവ് ഹായൂണ്‍ എന്ന ഇസ്രായേലി പ്ലംബര്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടെയുള്ള യാത്രക്കാരും ചേര്‍ന്ന് കോ-പൈലറ്റിനെ കീഴടക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ഇതോടെ ഗുരുതരമായി പരിക്കേറ്റിട്ടും മച്ചാര്‍ വിമാനത്തിന്റെ കണ്‍ട്രോള്‍ കൈക്കലാക്കി വിമാനം സുരക്ഷിതമാക്കുകയും ചെയ്തതായി റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ടുകള്‍ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

ഇസ്രായേലി വ്യോമാതിര്‍ത്തിയില്‍ നിന്ന് തിരിച്ചു പറന്ന വിമാനം സൗദിയിലെ തബൂക് വിമാനത്താവളത്തില്‍ അടിയന്തരമായി ലാന്‍ഡ് ചെയ്തു. 

 9/11 സംഭവത്തിന് ശേഷമുള്ള വ്യോമയാന മാനദണ്ഡങ്ങള്‍ അനുസരിച്ച്, കോക്ക്പിറ്റ് വാതിലുകള്‍ കവചിത ഡെഡ്ബോള്‍ട്ടുകള്‍ വഴി ഉള്ളില്‍ നിന്ന് പൂട്ടുകയാണ് പതിവ്. തര്‍ക്കത്തിനിടയില്‍ മച്ചാര്‍ വാതില്‍ അണ്‍ലോക്ക് ചെയ്തതോടെ കോ-പൈലറ്റിനെ കീഴടക്കാന്‍ യാത്രക്കാര്‍ക്കും ക്രൂ അംഗങ്ങള്‍ക്കും ഉള്ളിലേക്ക് കയറാന്‍ വഴിയൊരുക്കി.

ഭീകരാക്രമണ സാധ്യതയാണെന്ന് ഇസ്രായേലി അധികൃതര്‍ പരസ്യമായി വിലയിരുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. എന്നാല്‍, ആക്രമണത്തിന് പിന്നിലെ യഥാര്‍ത്ഥ കാരണം ഇനിയും സ്ഥിരീകരിച്ചിട്ടില്ലെന്നും ഭീകരാക്രമണം, ആത്മഹത്യാ ശ്രമം, അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ കടുത്ത മാനസിക സമ്മര്‍ദ്ദം തുടങ്ങിയ എല്ലാ വശങ്ങളും അന്വേഷിച്ചു വരികയാണെന്നും എയര്‍ലൈന്‍ അധികൃതരും അന്വേഷണ ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരും വ്യക്തമാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.

ലാന്‍ഡിംഗിന് പിന്നാലെ കോ-പൈലറ്റിനെ സൗദി അധികൃതര്‍ കസ്റ്റഡിയിലെടുത്തു. സൗദി, യു.എ.ഇ, ഇന്ത്യ, ഇസ്രായേല്‍ എന്നീ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലെ അധികൃതര്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടുന്ന സംയുക്ത ഏജന്‍സി തല അന്വേഷണം നിലവില്‍ പുരോഗമിക്കുകയാണ്.

Indian pilot Captain Smith Machar, who survived an unexpected attack in the cockpit of Flydubai flight FZ 1073 traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, has undergone surgery in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, and has begun recovering. His condition is currently satisfactory. After being transferred to the UAE, he is now recuperating.

Captain Dhaval Patel, who trained alongside Machar in New Zealand, praised his colleague's professional excellence. Patel shared that both of them trained together at a flight training company named Mainland Air in New Zealand.

"He began his career at a young age as a First Officer with SpiceJet. Even back then, he was a highly talented young man. Through his competence and skill, he earned a promotion to Captain. After attaining the rank of Captain, he became a trainer, imparting instruction to other pilots, co-pilots, and captains," Patel said.

According to Patel, Machar's domain knowledge, conduct, and attitude toward flying were characteristic of an exceptional pilot. Praising Machar's quick decision-making under any circumstance, Patel revealed that Machar always maintained a Plan B and a Plan C in his mind inside the cockpit.

"I have shared the cockpit with him many times while flying. He always had a Plan B—pilots receive training for that. However, he also had a Plan C in mind. His perspective on any issue, and his foresight regarding what might happen in the next second while flying at high speeds, were completely distinct," he added.

Patel claimed that this unique quality led Machar to make a brave move at that critical moment, doing exactly what was required at the time.

When asked how difficult it must have been to send distress signal 7700—the international code for hijacking or emergencies—while attempting to save the aircraft and fight off the co-pilot, Patel described Machar's presence of mind as "praiseworthy."

"Even in an injured state, it is commendable that Captain Smith unbuckled his seatbelt, walked to the door, and opened it. His presence of mind in that situation deserves respect and honor," he stated.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Machar has over 13 years of experience flying Boeing 737 aircraft. He has been working with Flydubai since 2022 and previously served with SpiceJet.

Meanwhile, the Gujarat government announced that Captain Smith Machar will be honored with the 'Vishisht Gujarat Garima Award' for his bravery. "The whole world today salutes the bravery of Captain Smith Machar, the pilot of the flight bound for Israel. Despite being soaked in blood during the attack, he displayed unmatched bravery to save the lives of 174 passengers. This is deeply inspiring and commendable," Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel posted on X.

"This brave son of Gujarat has brought honor to the state of Gujarat, the country, and the entire world. The Gujarati courage flowing through his veins fills us all with immense pride," he added.

Following the attack inside the cockpit, the aircraft descended rapidly by 14,000 to 17,000 feet in under two minutes. At one point, it dropped 14,000 feet in just 60 seconds. Flight-tracking data indicates severe manual interference or system manipulation occurred on the control surfaces and tail rudder of the aircraft.

Shortly after the distress signal was issued from the aircraft, Israeli Air Force fighter jets scrambled toward it.

Passengers and off-duty crew members entered the cockpit and subdued the attacker. Flydubai crew members traveling as passengers after completing their shift, along with passengers including an Israeli plumber named Yaniv Hayoun, overpowered the co-pilot. Reports suggest that despite being severely injured, Machar took back control of the aircraft and stabilized it.

The flight turned back from Israeli airspace and made an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.

Under post-9/11 aviation standards, cockpit doors are typically locked from the inside using armored deadbolts. During the struggle, Machar unlocked the door, allowing passengers and crew members to step inside and overpower the co-pilot.

Israeli authorities have publicly assessed the incident as a potential terror attack. However, airline officials and investigators clarified that the true motive behind the attack remains unconfirmed, and all possibilities—including terrorism, a suicide attempt, or extreme mental stress—are being thoroughly investigated.

Following the landing, Saudi authorities took the co-pilot into custody. A joint multi-agency investigation involving authorities from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, India, and Israel is currently underway.
