News in English: Following the call for a protest march to Jantar Mantar by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the election process, 3,000 of those arrested across Delhi were released by nightfall. However, CJP founder Abhijit Dipke and YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, who led the protest, have not been released.
Former Chief Ministers Pinarayi Vijayan, Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee, and Manik Sarkar were among those detained, and all four have now been released. CJP founder Abhijit Dipke and leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Sourav Das were taken into custody as soon as they landed in Delhi. While Abhijit Dipke was in police custody, his paternal grandmother passed away in his hometown in Maharashtra. Although the police informed him that he could attend the funeral, there was no clarity by evening on whether he was released.
Other prominent figures who were detained include Communist Party leaders M.A. Baby, Brinda Karat, and Dipankar Bhattacharya; activists Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan; AAP leaders Sanjay Singh, Saurabh Bharadwaj, and Gopal Rai; and TMC leaders Derek O'Brien, Dola Sen, and Saket Gokhale.
As part of cracking down on the protest, 45 station gates of the Delhi Metro were closed for 24 hours until 10 PM on Saturday, and over 250 trains were cancelled. Internet services were suspended within a 4-kilometer radius of Jantar Mantar in the heart of Delhi, which has served as a protest site for three decades. More than 25,000 personnel from the Delhi Police and central paramilitary forces were deployed.
Many individuals were taken into custody from their homes and hotel rooms even before they could step out to join the protest. YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was detained from the neighbouring Gurgaon district.
Similar situations are likely on Sunday. The CJP has announced daily marches to Jantar Mantar, while police have stated that strict security arrangements will continue. The Congress-led 'INDIA' bloc has also called for a protest on Monday.
The protests received support in places like Mumbai, Chennai, and Ahmedabad as well. In Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan, police detained around 200 people who protested in support of the CJP's Delhi agitation. Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, and actor Imran Khan were among those detained.
Activist Sonam Wangchuk also spoke out, citing a state of emergency. Wangchuk, who was the face of the CJP's initial protest in July over a question paper leak that led to the resignation of the Education Minister, stated that India is in an "undeclared emergency." "If they are not released tomorrow, I will be forced to consider launching a hunger strike and a foot march (padayatra)," he said. Wangchuk had skipped Saturday's protest due to work commitments in Ladakh.
In light of the agitations, a special sitting of the Supreme Court will be held on Sunday. This sitting will consider contempt petitions and allegations of order violations. The court's decision will determine the next steps of the proceedings.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi stated that he will visit the Supreme Court on Monday to meet Chief Justice Surya Kant and submit a petition.
The INDIA alliance submitted a memorandum to the President outlining four key demands:
The resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar and the repeal of the 2023 law granting lifetime immunity to the CEC and Election Commissioners.
The immediate halt of the voter list revision process and the reinstatement of the 13.3 million (13.3 crore) voters removed from the electoral rolls.
A return to paper ballots in all elections.
The cancellation of all assembly elections held over the past two years where "evidence of vote leakage emerged."
As part of suppressing the protests, heavy security was deployed across Delhi. Around 40,000 security personnel, comprising police and paramilitary forces, have been deployed in the capital. Barricades were erected in central parts of Delhi, and operations at 45 metro stations were suspended.
