An Indian-owned pharmaceutical plant belonging to the Kusum Group was destroyed in Ukraine following a Russian drone attack. One person was killed and several others were injured in the strike.
A major portion of the main pharma plant located in Sumy, Ukraine, was destroyed in the attack. Authorities stated that the casualties and the number of injured could rise further. Visuals showed dense smoke billowing from the plant in Sumy hit by the drones.
The Kusum Group began its operations in 1994 as a distributor exporting medicines from India to Ukraine. The entity is currently run by an Indian citizen, Rajiv Gupta.
In 2002, the company stopped distributing products of other firms and began launching its own brands in the market. Entering the manufacturing sector thereafter, it established production units in India in 2007 and in Sumy, Ukraine, in 2009. Later, it opened two more plants in India.
Manufacturing over 50 medicines primarily in the generic segment, the company exports its products to around nine countries, including Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and the Philippines.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack in a post on X and expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased.
"This morning, Russians again launched a drone attack on the Pivnichnyi Bridge in Kyiv. A pharmaceutical warehouse in Sumy was also targeted in a drone strike. Tragically, one person was killed. I express my condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. A communications center in Dnipro was targeted as well. Six people were injured in these attacks," he stated.
The Sumy plant, which had continued its operations throughout the Russia-Ukraine war, suffered severe damage in this latest attack, with losses estimated at around ₹400 crore.
