Rafale Marine Makes Maiden Landing on INS Vikrant, Boosting Naval Might
News in English:
The Rafale Marine fighter aircraft has successfully landed for the first time on India’s indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant. The aircraft completed the landing on its very first attempt.
This achievement marks a significant milestone in integrating the aircraft into carrier-based operations prior to its official induction into the Indian Navy. The Navy had been conducting flight trials of the Rafale Marine in Goa to assess the modifications required for operations from INS Vikrant.
These trials are being conducted to ensure the aircraft's compatibility with the aircraft carrier and to prepare it for operational service.
On April 28, 2025, India signed an agreement worth approximately ?63,000 crore with France to acquire 26 Rafale aircraft for the Navy. India is procuring 22 single-seat fighter aircraft and 4 twin-seat trainer aircraft. The deal includes weapons, simulators, training, associated equipment, and logistics support.
Deliveries will be completed by 2030. Naval personnel will receive training in both India and France. The agreement also includes the transfer of technology for integrating indigenous weapons onto the aircraft.
A manufacturing facility for the Rafale fuselage (the aircraft's main body) as well as MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) centers for engines, sensors, and weapons will be established in India.
The Rafale Marine aircraft will empower the Navy to conduct air defense and attack missions against maritime and land targets, significantly enhancing its carrier-based air power.
Currently operated exclusively by the French Navy, Rafale Marine aircraft are specially designed for aircraft carrier operations. Their arrival will substantially boost the Indian Navy's combat capability in the Indian Ocean Region.
