News in English:
Amid protests in the national capital against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, four former chief ministers from the opposition ranks were detained by police on Saturday. Kerala's former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, West Bengal's former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Delhi's former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and Tripura's former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar were taken into police custody while attempting to join the 'Cockroach Janata Party' protest in the capital.
Along with Pinarayi Vijayan, CPI(M) MP John Brittas was also detained by the police and shifted to the detention center at Chhatrasal Stadium. Manik Sarkar was also taken into custody during the protest. After arresting Pinarayi, the police drove around with him in Delhi for over two hours. Pinarayi appeared heavily exhausted due to the police action in the intense heat.
After being intercepted by the police at South Avenue in Central Delhi, the Trinamool Congress supremo and several party MPs staged a sit-in at a bus stand and were subsequently detained by the police.
Along with Mamata Banerjee, five MPs from her party, including Derek O'Brien and Dola Sen, were taken into police custody and escorted in a police bus. Mamata Banerjee went to the protest with her mouth covered with a bandage (band-aid). "The government is treating us badly," Mamata said in a video message from inside the police bus. "The INDIA bloc will continue its fight to give strength to the voice of the people," she added.
All other opposition leaders and student leaders were detained while attempting to join the protest at Jantar Mantar.
Arvind Kejriwal, outside whose residence Delhi Police had been stationed since morning, was detained when he attempted to step out of his house to participate in the protest.
In a video message released after his detention, Kejriwal said the youth of the country will not be intimidated by this suppression. "The youth of India will not be afraid. We will fight against 'vote leakage'. Everyone must come forward and protest," he said.
Mamata Banerjee had arrived in Delhi on Friday to participate in the opposition's protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Mamata was also part of the INDIA bloc delegation that met President Droupadi Murmu on Friday evening to demand the removal of Gyanesh Kumar.
During the meeting with the President, opposition leaders raised their allegations of 'vote leakage', demanding Gyanesh Kumar's resignation and the cancellation of all assembly elections held over the past two years. Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi stated he was surprised that the President did not dismiss their 'election fraud' allegations.
However, reliable sources later clarified that Rahul Gandhi's claims regarding President Droupadi Murmu accepting arguments about 'vote leakage' were false.
Speaking after the meeting, Rahul Gandhi announced that since they want to exhaust all available options, opposition leaders will visit the Supreme Court on Monday to submit a memorandum to Chief Justice Surya Kant.
The INDIA bloc has also called for large-scale protests on coming Monday against the irregularities of the Election Commission. Earlier this morning, CJP leaders Abhijit Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka, and Sourav Das, who landed in Delhi to participate in the protest, were detained by the police.
