News in English:
INDIA bloc leaders, led by the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, filed a crucial petition in the Supreme Court against the Election Commission on Monday, protesting against the mass deletion of voters' names and irregularities in the voter list revision. The petition also expresses concern over restrictions imposed on peaceful protests.
The petition was filed following the 'March for Democracy' conducted to the Supreme Court by INDIA bloc MPs and supporters against electoral irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. The petition was submitted by Gandhi’s legal team on behalf of the Congress leader and other opposition figures.
The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) names 11 opposition leaders: Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Trinamool Congress leader Saugata Roy, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav, RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, CPM leader M. A. Baby, CPI leader D. Raja, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader Mahua Maji, NCP (SCP) leader Supriya Sule, and IUML leader E. T. Muhammed Basheer.
The Election Commission has been listed as one of the four respondents in the petition. Further details of the petition, including the specific directions sought, have not yet been disclosed.
Earlier, INDIA bloc leaders had sought permission to meet Chief Justice Surya Kant, but the request was turned down. The Chief Justice clarified that discussing matters currently under the consideration of the Supreme Court during such meetings goes against the principle of separation of powers.
Senior advocate and Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi stated that the petition addresses various aspects of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) proceedings as well as the restrictions imposed on peaceful protests. He noted that leaders from various opposition parties joined this legal battle by signing the petition.
Responding to questions regarding the opposition's earlier attempt to meet the Chief Justice, Singhvi denied that the leaders tried to exert pressure on the judiciary. He explained that they had only written a letter seeking time for an appointment, and after being advised to file a petition, they opted for the legal route.
Defending the march, Singhvi described the participation of protesters as a natural reflection of public anger and dissatisfaction. Denying allegations that people were paid to attend the rally, he asserted that participants joined voluntarily.
He did not specify any timeframe for the hearing or disposal of the petition.
Numerous opposition MPs, political leaders, and workers participated in the 'Democracy March' led by Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge. Gathering at the Constitution Club, they traveled in four air-conditioned buses to the Barakhamba Road junction and then proceeded on foot toward the Supreme Court.
However, Delhi Police stopped the procession near the barricades on Bhagwan Das Road. Following the blockage, several leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav, climbed atop a vehicle and addressed the crowd.
The opposition’s demonstration took place amid existing restrictions on protests in the national capital. Following the exclusion of Jantar Mantar as an official protest site, the Delhi Police issued an order on October 11 designating Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground, and the CBD Ground in East Delhi as venues for demonstrations.
The Congress criticized these restrictions, accusing the authorities of blocking peaceful demonstrations. Alleging that officials acted brutally toward public protests, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh mocked that democracy had turned into mere "Demokursi" (power-seat politics).
"Turn Approver," Rahul Tells Gyanesh Kumar
Rahul Gandhi announced the decision to approach the Supreme Court shortly after the Chief Justice declined the request for a meeting with the Leaders of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
Addressing a press conference at the Congress headquarters, Rahul Gandhi urged Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign and "turn approver." He alleged that the head of the Election Commission of India (ECI) was not the mastermind behind the alleged irregularities.
"Resign and turn approver; you (Kumar) made a mistake, but you are not the mastermind behind that mistake," Rahul Gandhi said.
Rahul Gandhi asserted that the opposition's campaign would continue as long as necessary. He also claimed that around 200 government officials are in touch with the opposition and are providing information.
