Raigad: Eight 16-year-old students from Pune drowned after getting caught in strong sea currents at Diveagar Beach, a popular tourist destination in Maharashtra's Raigad district.
The deceased have been identified as Tanmay Dattatray Vahile, Sumit Bharat Ahire, Pranav Ramdas Bansode, Kaivalya Satish Vasankar, Rajveer Yuvraj Vahile, Yash Kiran Wankhede, Soham Tukaram Bhandwalkar, and Kaustubh Sandeep Daund.
Police confirmed that all the bodies have been recovered. The students were part of a group that had traveled around 170 kilometers from 'Winners Academy,' a private coaching center in Alandi, Pune district.
According to police, a 48-member group—comprising 25 boys, 17 girls, and six teachers—arrived at the beach around 5:30 PM. Eight of the students entered the sea and were swept away by strong currents after failing to gauge the depth and flow of the water.
Upon learning of the incident, Bhau Salunkhe, owner of 'Bhau Maruti Salunkhe Mahakali Water Sports' at Diveagar, and his team immediately launched a rescue operation. Risking their own lives, the water sports team retrieved the bodies of all eight victims from the sea.
The bodies were shifted to the Primary Health Centre in Borli Panchatan for post-mortem and necessary legal procedures.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed deep grief over the incident, describing it as "extremely tragic and heartbreaking."
Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan ordered an inquiry into the incident, stating that the academy must be held accountable. He added that the state will soon issue new safety guidelines for school picnics and educational trips.
