News in English:
Brutal police action by the Delhi Police and CRPF occurred during a protest organized by Left-youth organizations and CJP at Connaught Place, Delhi, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The police forcefully detained and severely assaulted protesters, MPs, and journalists present at the venue.
Assault on MP John Brittas and Leaders
While speaking to the media at the protest site, CPM Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas was forcefully dragged and pushed into a vehicle by CRPF officials and the police.
John Brittas stated that despite repeatedly declaring that he is a Member of Parliament, four police officers ignored him, shoved him under the seat, pressed his face down, physically assaulted him, and suffocated him.
He was later released on the way following instructions from the DCP, who witnessed the assault through the camera of a Delhi Police officer inside the vehicle.
He further reacted that DYFI leader Jaick C. Thomas was stripped and brutally beaten, describing what happened inside the vehicle as absolute police terror.
SFI National President Adarsh M. Saji was also assaulted during the protest and suffered a head injury. CPI leader Annie Raja was dragged along the road by the police. MPs A.A. Rahim and P. Santhosh Kumar also arrived at the spot.
Violence Against Journalists
The police did not spare the journalists covering the protest. Asianet News reporter Sajin, 24 News journalist Suhail Muhammad, and cameraman V.S. Rahul were taken into custody.
Suhail Muhammad was grabbed by the neck, dragged into a vehicle, and his camera and microphone were seized and thrown away.
Female journalists were also among those detained in the bus, and allegations have been raised that female police officers kicked them during the scuffle.
CJP Leaders' Criticism and 'Emergency' Allegations
CJP leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Sourav Das held a press conference strongly criticizing the Union Government and the Election Commission.
They alleged that the current situation is worse than the 1975 Emergency, and that a panicked Narendra Modi and Amit Shah are suppressing protests.
They accused Gyanesh Kumar of working solely to favor the BJP, calling the events in Delhi a blatant violation of democracy and fundamental rights.
INDIA Alliance to Intensify Protests
Amidst the protests, the INDIA alliance decided to intensify the agitation demanding the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar. Plans are being considered to meet the Chief Justice of India tomorrow and march to the Supreme Court to submit a memorandum. Left and youth organizations affirmed that no amount of suppression will cause them to retreat from the protest. The MPs informed that they would approach the Delhi DCP with video footage of the police atrocities.
