Thiruvananthapuram: Throwing the BJP-led administration of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation into uncertainty, former IPS officer R. Sreelekha has resigned from her position as councillor. The BJP had been governing the 101-member council with the support of an independent candidate. With Sreelekha’s resignation, the administration is now in jeopardy. The BJP leadership is making urgent moves to appease her.
Party Position in the Corporation
Total Seats: 101
BJP: 49
LDF: 29
UDF: 20
Independents: 2
Among the BJP's 49 councillors, Sugathan is currently in jail as an accused in a KAAPA (Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act) case. This has further placed the party leadership in a dilemma.
Sreelekha was elected from the Sasthamangalam ward. She is also a State Vice President of the BJP. She was fielded as a candidate with the promise of being made Mayor. However, when the party secured power, the BJP appointed V.V. Rajesh as Mayor instead. She had walked out of the swearing-in ceremony of Rajesh. Although she hoped to secure at least the Deputy Mayor post, the party was unwilling to offer that as well.
Reports indicate that she handed over her resignation letter to the Mayor on September 30. Mayor Rajesh confirmed receiving the resignation letter, in which she cited personal reasons for resigning. However, as per rules, the resignation letter must be submitted to the Corporation Secretary. She announced in a WhatsApp group that she would hand over her resignation to the Collector on Monday.
R. Sreelekha, the first woman IPS officer in Kerala and a former DGP, joined the BJP after retiring from service and won the election to the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.
Later, she was fielded as a candidate in the Vattiyoorkavu Assembly constituency, but finished third. Vattiyoorkavu was one of the seats where the BJP anticipated a victory.
During her IPS service, she had openly shared the neglect she faced within the police force and the political interference in police operations through her memoirs and YouTube channel (Sasneham Sreelekha).
