Amid escalating attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels from Yemen targeting Saudi Arabian airports, the Indian Embassy in Riyadh has instructed Indian citizens in Saudi Arabia to remain vigilant and stay indoors.
Saudi authorities confirmed that three people were killed in Houthi attacks targeting Riyadh and Abha airports on Wednesday. These mark the first casualties reported since Saudi Arabia and coalition forces launched strong ground and air strikes against the rebels.
"In view of the prevailing situation, all Indian nationals in Saudi Arabia are requested to exercise caution, remain indoors as far as possible, and follow the instructions issued by local authorities through official channels," stated the advisory issued by the Indian Embassy in Riyadh. The advisory also warned Indian nationals to completely refrain from sharing or reposting videos or news related to the ongoing events.
The embassy in Riyadh, the consulate in Jeddah, and services through VFS are currently functioning normally, and updated information and guidelines will be issued as required, the notice added. The 24-hour helpline number of the Pravasi Bhartiya Sahayata Kendra (Toll-Free: 8002471234) is active.
Considering the security situation, airlines including Air India, IndiGo, and Air India Express have canceled flights to Riyadh until October 10. The airlines announced that affected passengers will be granted a full refund.
Protesting support extended to the United States, Houthis have been continuously launching attacks on Saudi airports, military installations, and oil production facilities over the past few days.
Describing Saudi airspace as a active combat zone for their military operations, the rebels issued a "final warning" early Thursday to global airlines operating in the region.
"Considering the evolving situation in the region, we have canceled flight operations to and from Riyadh until October 10. Affected passengers are being offered free date changes or full refunds. We are closely monitoring the situation," an Air India Express spokesperson stated.
Shortly after loud explosion sounds were heard in the Saudi capital of Riyadh, authorities at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh advised passengers on Thursday to contact their respective airlines directly before heading to the airport.
Presence of Pakistani Military in Saudi Arabia
Amid ongoing lethal cross-border attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels, Pakistan confirmed that it has deployed its troops in the Gulf nation of Saudi Arabia. "Pakistan's military forces are currently present there," stated Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, head of the media wing of the Pakistan Armed Forces, in an exclusive interview with CNN. However, he declined to reveal the exact number or operational capabilities of the deployed troops.
This confirmation follows a new defense pact signed between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey. These attacks serve as evidence that the conflict is spilling over onto Saudi Arabian soil in response to military actions taken by Riyadh alongside the Yemeni government. Mecca Alliance
As part of strengthening defense cooperation, Saudi Arabia signed a mutual defense pact named the "Mecca Alliance" with NATO-member Turkey and nuclear-armed Pakistan. Under the agreement, an attack against any member nation will be considered an attack on all.
It remains unclear whether Pakistan will directly participate in cross-border military operations in Yemen. Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry clarified that the sole objective of this alliance is the defense of Saudi Arabia and that Pakistan is aiming to restore peace in the region. Facing severe economic distress, Pakistan is attempting to secure maximum financial assistance from Saudi Arabia by deploying its forces.
Attacks Targeting Airports
On Wednesday, the Houthis launched a ballistic missile attack on King Khalid Airport in Riyadh. A Sudanese national was killed and eight others were injured in this strike. Subsequently, Saudi Coalition spokesperson Major General Turki Al-Malki announced that the missile launcher used for the attack was destroyed. In a separate attack on Abha Airport, two women—nationals of Morocco and Algeria—were killed, and 28 others sustained injuries.
