News in English: More details are emerging regarding the incident in which a minor girl from Andhra Pradesh was subjected to abuse at a spa in Kovalam. The 16-year-old girl, whose parents are deceased, was sold to a spa by her mother's sister (small mother/aunt) and her husband.
Prior to this, the couple had placed the girl in various establishments for work and collected money for themselves. To facilitate her employment, they also fabricated a fake Aadhaar card showing her age as 20.
Before arriving in Kovalam, the girl was also subjected to exploitation at a spa in Bengaluru. After reaching Kovalam, the girl was taken to about eight different establishments and subjected to continuous sexual abuse.
The incident came to light when the girl, having grown close to a fellow employee at the spa, attempted to elope with him. Following this, a complaint was lodged with the police, and an investigation revealed that according to school records, the girl's actual age is 16. A fake Aadhaar card had been used to conceal this.
Under the leadership of Kovalam Circle Inspector Sreekumar, the police arrested spa employees Sajith Kumar (Mavelikkara) and Nishanth (Poovar). The relatives who sold the girl have returned to Andhra Pradesh, and the police have intensified their search for them. The police have also found that the spa is a benami (proxy-owned) establishment operated by a health department official, among others.
In the wake of this incident and similar occurrences, Kerala Police, under the leadership of ADGP (Law and Order) P. Vijayan, have launched state-wide raids under the name 'Operation Spa'. Inspections were conducted at spas across various districts, and cases were registered against establishments that violated regulations. Inspections were carried out at 586 spas across the state, five people were arrested in various cases, and notices were issued to four spas. Police stated that the inspections will continue in the coming days.
