മുംബയ്: ഐഐടി-ബോംബെ പ്രൊഫസര്‍ സൂര്യനാരായണ ദൂല്ലയെ ഡീന്‍ സ്ഥാനത്തുനിന്ന് ഔദ്യോഗികമായി നീക്കി. രണ്ടാം വര്‍ഷ എന്‍ജിനീയറിങ് വിദ്യാര്‍ഥി സാഹില്‍ വാക്കോഡെ, മിഡ്-സെമസ്റ്റര്‍ പരീക്ഷയ്ക്കിടെ കോപ്പിയടിയോ ആരോപിച്ച് പിടിയിലായതിനെത്തുടര്‍ന്ന് ആത്മഹത്യ ചെയ്ത് മൂന്ന് ദിവസത്തിന് ശേഷമാണ് ഈ നടപടി.

സെപ്റ്റംബര്‍ 18-നാണ്  സാഹില്‍  മരിച്ചത്. പരീക്ഷയ്ക്കിടെ മൊബൈല്‍ ഫോണ്‍ ഉപയോഗിച്ചതായി കണ്ടെത്തിയതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്നായിരുന്നു ഇത്. എനര്‍ജി സയന്‍സ് ആന്‍ഡ് എന്‍ജിനീയറിങ് വിഭാഗം അധ്യാപകനായ ദൂല്ലയായിരുന്നു പരീക്ഷാ ഇന്‍വിജിലേറ്റര്‍. ഇദ്ദേഹമാണ് ക്രമക്കേട് ഉയര്‍ന്ന അധികാരികളെ അറിയിച്ചത്.

എന്നാല്‍, സംഭവത്തിന് ശേഷം സാഹില്‍ വാക്കോഡെയ്ക്ക് കൗണ്‍സലിങ് നല്‍കിയെന്നും അച്ചടക്ക നടപടികളൊന്നുമില്ലാതെ പോകാന്‍ അനുവദിച്ചിരുന്നുവെന്നുമാണ് ഐഐടി-ബോംബെ വ്യക്തമാക്കിയത്. സെപ്റ്റംബര്‍ 20 ന് വൈകുന്നേരം സമരം ചെയ്ത വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികള്‍ സമര്‍പ്പിച്ച 18 ഇന ആവശ്യങ്ങള്‍ അടങ്ങിയ ചാര്‍ട്ടറില്‍ ഐഐടി-ബോംബെ ഡയറക്ടര്‍ പ്രൊഫ. ശിരീഷ് കേദാരെ ഒപ്പുവച്ചതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്നാണ് ദൂല്ലയെ ഡീന്‍ സ്ഥാനത്തുനിന്ന് നീക്കിയത്.

സാഹില്‍  വാക്കോഡെയുടെ മരണത്തില്‍ ഉത്തരവാദിത്തം ഉറപ്പാക്കണമെന്നും മരണസാഹചര്യങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് സ്വതന്ത്രമായ അന്വേഷണം വേണമെന്നും ഇന്‍സ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ടിന്റെ അക്കാദമിക്, വിദ്യാര്‍ഥി-ക്ഷേമ സംവിധാനങ്ങളില്‍ പരിഷ്‌കാരങ്ങള്‍ വരുത്തണമെന്നും ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ട് വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികള്‍ മൂന്ന് ദിവസമായി പ്രതിഷേധത്തിലായിരുന്നു. ദൂല്ലയെ സസ്‌പെന്‍ഡ് ചെയ്യണമെന്നതായിരുന്നു ചാര്‍ട്ടറിലെ പ്രധാന ആവശ്യങ്ങളിലൊന്ന്.

പരീക്ഷയ്ക്കിടെ വാക്കോഡെ മൊബൈല്‍ ഫോണ്‍ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ചാറ്റ്ജിപിടി വഴി ഉത്തരങ്ങള്‍ തിരഞ്ഞുവെന്ന് ആരോപിക്കപ്പെട്ട സമയത്ത് ദൂല്ലയായിരുന്നു ഇന്‍വിജിലേറ്റര്‍. ചോദ്യപ്പേപ്പര്‍ ഒരു എഐ പ്ലാറ്റ്ഫോമിലേക്ക് അപ്ലോഡ് ചെയ്ത് ഉത്തരങ്ങള്‍ കണ്ടെത്താന്‍ വാക്കോഡെ ശ്രമിച്ചതായി ഐഐടി-ബോംബെ നേരത്തെ വ്യക്തമാക്കിയിരുന്നു.

സംഭവത്തിന് ശേഷം വാക്കോഡെയ്ക്ക് കൗണ്‍സലിങ് നല്‍കിയിരുന്നതായും ഇത് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അക്കാദമിക് കരിയറിനെ പ്രതികൂലമായി ബാധിക്കില്ലെന്ന് ഉറപ്പുനല്‍കിയിരുന്നതായും ഇന്‍സ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ട് വ്യക്തമാക്കി. ആ ഘട്ടത്തില്‍ വിദ്യാര്‍ഥിക്കെതിരെ അച്ചടക്ക നടപടികളൊന്നും ആരംഭിച്ചിരുന്നില്ലെന്നും ഇന്‍സ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ട് കൂട്ടിച്ചേര്‍ത്തു.

എന്നാല്‍, പീഡനവും ജാതി അധിക്ഷേപവും ആരോപിച്ച വാക്കോഡെയുടെ മാതാപിതാക്കള്‍, മകന്റെ മരണത്തിന് ഇന്‍സ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ടിലെ ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരാണ് ഉത്തരവാദികളെന്ന് ആരോപിച്ചു. കുടുംബം നല്‍കിയ പരാതിയുടെ അടിസ്ഥാനത്തില്‍ രജിസ്റ്റര്‍ ചെയ്ത എഫ്ഐആറില്‍ ദൂല്ലയുടെ പേരും ഉള്‍പ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഈ ആരോപണങ്ങളില്‍ നിലവില്‍ അന്വേഷണം നടക്കുകയാണ്.

ഇതേസമയം, ഒരു ഇന്‍വിജിലേറ്റര്‍ എന്ന നിലയിലുള്ള ചുമതല മാത്രമാണ് ദൂല്ല നിര്‍വഹിച്ചതെന്നും സ്ഥാപിത നിയമങ്ങള്‍ക്കനുസൃതമായി പരീക്ഷയിലെ ക്രമക്കേട് റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട് ചെയ്യുക മാത്രമാണ് ചെയ്തതെന്നും വ്യക്തമാക്കി ഐഐടി-ബോംബെ ഫാക്കല്‍റ്റി ഫോറം നേരത്തെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് പിന്തുണ അറിയിച്ചിരുന്നു.

ഡയറക്ടര്‍ ഒപ്പുവച്ച 18 ഇന ചാര്‍ട്ടറില്‍ ദൂല്ലയുടെ സസ്പെന്‍ഷന്‍ എന്ന ആവശ്യത്തിന് പുറമെ മറ്റ് പല കാര്യങ്ങളുമുണ്ട്. വാക്കോഡെയുടെ മരണസാഹചര്യങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് സ്വതന്ത്രമായ അന്വേഷണം, സമയബന്ധിതമായ റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട്, മുതിര്‍ന്ന ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരുമായി പരസ്യ സംവാദം, വിദ്യാര്‍ഥിയെ പരസ്യമായി അധിക്ഷേപിച്ച സംഭവത്തില്‍ ക്ഷമാപണം എന്നിവയാണ് വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികള്‍ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടത്.

വാക്കോഡെയുടെ മരണവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് മുമ്പ് പുറപ്പെടുവിച്ച പ്രസ്താവനയില്‍ ഐഐടി-ബോംബെ ക്ഷമ ചോദിക്കുകയും, ഡയറക്ടര്‍ പ്രൊഫ. ശിരീഷ് കേദാരെ രാജിവച്ചിട്ടില്ലെന്നും സ്ഥാനത്ത് തുടരുമെന്നും വ്യക്തമാക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. വിദ്യാര്‍ഥി പ്രതിഷേധത്തെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് കേദാരെ രാജിവച്ചതായി റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ടുകളും സോഷ്യല്‍ മീഡിയ പ്രചാരണങ്ങളും ഉയര്‍ന്ന സാഹചര്യത്തിലാണ് ഈ വിശദീകരണം.

വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികള്‍ മുന്നോട്ടുവച്ച 18 ഇന ആവശ്യങ്ങള്‍ അംഗീകരിച്ചതിന് പിന്നാലെയാണ് ഇന്‍സ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ടിന്റെ ഈ പ്രതികരണം. അധ്യാപകര്‍ക്കുള്ള പെരുമാറ്റച്ചട്ടം, മാനസികാരോഗ്യ ബോധവല്‍ക്കരണം, കൗണ്‍സലിങ് സേവനങ്ങളുടെ മെച്ചപ്പെടുത്തല്‍, അച്ചടക്ക നടപടിക്രമങ്ങളിലെ മാറ്റങ്ങള്‍, വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികള്‍ക്ക് കൂടുതല്‍ പ്രാതിനിധ്യം നല്‍കല്‍ എന്നിവയും വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികളുടെ ആവശ്യങ്ങളില്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടുന്നു. കാമ്പസിലെ വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികളുടെ മാനസിക സമ്മര്‍ദ്ദത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് പഠിക്കാന്‍ വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികള്‍, അധ്യാപകര്‍, മാനസികാരോഗ്യ വിദഗ്ദ്ധര്‍, ബാഹ്യ വിദഗ്ദ്ധര്‍ എന്നിവരടങ്ങുന്ന ഒരു ടാസ്‌ക് ഫോഴ്സ് രൂപീകരിക്കാനും വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികള്‍ നിര്‍ദ്ദേശിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

ചാര്‍ട്ടറില്‍ ഒപ്പുവച്ചതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് ദൂല്ലയുടെ സസ്പെന്‍ഷന്‍ ഔദ്യോഗികമായി നടപ്പിലായതോടെ, ഇനി നിര്‍ദ്ദിഷ്ട സ്വതന്ത്ര അന്വേഷണത്തിലേക്കും വാക്കോഡെയുടെ മരണത്തില്‍ നടക്കുന്ന മറ്റ് അന്വേഷണങ്ങളിലേക്കുമാണ് ശ്രദ്ധ കേന്ദ്രീകരിക്കുന്നത്.

IIT-Bombay Professor Suryanarayana Doolla has been officially removed from his position as Dean. This action comes three days after Sahil Wankhede, a second-year engineering student, died by suicide following allegations of cheating during a mid-semester examination.

Wankhede passed away on September 18. This followed the discovery that he had allegedly used a mobile phone during the exam. Professor Doolla, a faculty member in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, was the exam invigilator who reported the irregularity to higher authorities.

However, IIT-Bombay clarified that following the incident, Wankhede was provided counseling and permitted to leave without any immediate disciplinary action. Professor Doolla was removed from the Dean’s post after IIT-Bombay Director Prof. Shireesh Kedare signed an 18-point charter of demands submitted by protesting students on the evening of September 20.

Students had been protesting for three days, demanding accountability for Wankhede's death, an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding it, and structural reforms in the institute’s academic and student-welfare systems. A key demand in the charter was the suspension of Doolla.

Doolla was the invigilator at the time Wankhede was accused of using a mobile phone to look up answers via ChatGPT during the exam. IIT-Bombay had previously stated that Wankhede attempted to find answers by uploading the question paper to an AI platform.

The institute emphasized that Wankhede received counseling after the incident and was assured that it would not adversely affect his academic career. It added that no disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against the student at that point.

However, Wankhede's parents alleged harassment and caste-based discrimination, holding institute officials responsible for their son's death. Doolla’s name has been included in an FIR registered based on a complaint filed by the family. An investigation into these allegations is currently underway.

Meanwhile, the IIT-Bombay Faculty Forum previously extended support to Doolla, clarifying that he had merely fulfilled his duty as an invigilator by reporting the exam irregularity in accordance with established rules.

In addition to Doolla’s suspension, the 18-point charter signed by the Director includes several other demands. Students asked for an independent investigation into the circumstances of Wankhede’s death, a time-bound report, an open public dialogue with senior administrators, and an apology for the public shaming of the student.

IIT-Bombay issued an apology regarding its previous statement concerning Wankhede’s death and clarified that Director Prof. Shireesh Kedare has not resigned and continues in his position. This clarification came amid reports and social media speculation suggesting Kedare had stepped down following the student protests.

The institute’s statement followed its acceptance of the 18-point demand list. The demands also encompass a code of conduct for faculty, mental health awareness initiatives, improved counseling services, changes to disciplinary procedures, and increased student representation. Students additionally proposed forming a task force—comprising students, faculty, mental health professionals, and external experts—to assess campus mental health stress.

With Doolla’s removal taking official effect following the signing of the charter, attention now shifts toward the proposed independent probe and ongoing police investigations into Wankhede’s death.

The investigation will examine the circumstances leading to the incident and determine whether any individuals bear responsibility for the subsequent events.
