സുരക്ഷാ കാരണങ്ങളാല്, വീഡിയോ കോണ്ഫറന്സിംഗ് വഴിയാണ് വീരമണിയെ സ്പെഷ്യല് ജഡ്ജ് എസ്. പദ്മയ്ക്ക് മുന്നില് ഹാജരാക്കിയത്. വാദം കേട്ട ശേഷം ജഡ്ജി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ജുഡിഷ്യല് കസ്റ്റഡി ഒക്ടോബര് 9 വരെ നീട്ടുകയായിരുന്നു.
പ്രായപൂര്ത്തിയാകാത്ത പെണ്കുട്ടികളെ ലൈംഗികമായി പീഡിപ്പിച്ചുവെന്നാണ് വീരമണിക്കെതിരെയുള്ള ആരോപണം. കേസില് ഇയാളും മറ്റ് മൂന്ന് പേരും അറസ്റ്റിലായിട്ടുണ്ട്. 2024 നവംബറില് പരാതി നല്കിയിട്ടും പോലീസ് നടപടിയെടുത്തില്ലെന്ന ആരോപണത്തെ തുടര്ന്ന്, മുന് ചെന്നൈ പോലീസ് കമ്മിഷണര് എ. അരുണ് ഉള്പ്പെടെ രണ്ട് മുതിര്ന്ന ഐ.പി.എസ് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരെ സ്ഥാനങ്ങളില് നിന്ന് മാറ്റി സര്ക്കാര് നിര്ബന്ധിത അവധിയില് പ്രവേശിപ്പിച്ചു.
കേസില് ആരോപണവിധേയരായവര്ക്ക് കടുത്ത ശിക്ഷ നല്കണമെന്ന് രാഷ്ട്രീയ പാര്ട്ടികളും സിവില് സൊസൈറ്റി ഗ്രൂപ്പുകളും ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടതോടെ തമിഴ്നാട്ടില് ശക്തമായ പ്രതികരണങ്ങളാണ് ഉണ്ടായത്.
ഗ്രാനൈറ്റ് പ്രമുഖനില് നിന്ന് പോക്സോ കേസ് പ്രതിയിലേക്ക്
ഗ്രാനൈറ്റ് ഖനനത്തിലും കയറ്റുമതിയിലും വന് വിജയം കൈവരിച്ച, ഉന്നത ബന്ധങ്ങളുള്ള വ്യവസായിയായാണ് വീരമണി അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്. എന്നാല്, പ്രായപൂര്ത്തിയാകാത്ത പെണ്കുട്ടിയെ ലൈംഗികമായി പീഡിപ്പിച്ച കേസില് അറസ്റ്റിലായതോടെയാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഇരുണ്ട മുഖം പുറത്തുവന്നത്.
''ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും മുതിര്ന്ന ഗ്രാനൈറ്റ് കയറ്റുമതിക്കാരനാണ് ആര്. വീരമണി. 86 രാജ്യങ്ങളില് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ഓഫീസുകളുണ്ട്...'' 2017-ല് ഡര്ബനില് നടന്ന വേള്ഡ് തമിഴ് ഇക്കണോമിക് കോണ്ഫറന്സില്, അതിന്റെ പ്രസിഡന്റ് വി.ആര്.എസ്. സമ്പത്ത് വീരമണിയെ പരിചയപ്പെടുത്തിയത് ഇപ്രകാരമാണ്. രാജ്യത്തെ ഗ്രാനൈറ്റ് കയറ്റുമതി മേഖലയുടെ വഴികാട്ടി, വിപുലമായ ബന്ധങ്ങളുള്ള സംരംഭകന്, വിവിധ വ്യവസായ സംഘടനകളുടെ തലവന്, സര്ക്കാര് സമിതികളിലെ അംഗം എന്നിങ്ങനെ ജനമനസ്സില് അദ്ദേഹം കെട്ടിപ്പടുത്ത പ്രതിച്ഛായക്ക് ചേര്ന്നതായിരുന്നു ആ വാക്കുകള്.

വീരമണനിക്കെതിരെയുള്ള ആരോപണങ്ങള് കേട്ട് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മുന് ബിസിനസ് സുഹൃത്തുക്കള് പലരും അമ്പരപ്പിലാണ്. 'ഈ കേസ് എല്ലാവരെയും ഞെട്ടിച്ചിരിക്കുകയാണ്,' വീരമണി 1983-ല് സ്ഥാപിച്ച ഫെഡറേഷന് ഒഫ് ഇന്ത്യന് ഗ്രാനൈറ്റ് ആന്ഡ് സ്റ്റോണ് ഇന്ഡസ്ട്രിയുടെ നിലവിലെ പ്രസിഡന്റ് ഇഷ്വിന്ദര് സിംഗ് പറഞ്ഞു. വ്യവസായ രംഗത്തെ മറ്റു പലരും ഇതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് പ്രതികരിക്കാന് വിസമ്മതിച്ചു.

പടിഞ്ഞാറന് തമിഴ്നാട്ടില് സ്വാധീനമുള്ള കോങ്ക് വെള്ളാള ഗൗണ്ടര് സമുദായത്തിലാണ് ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കുടുംബം ജനിച്ചത്. മുന്പ് ധാതു ഖനനത്തില് സജീവമായിരുന്ന ഈ സമുദായം, സര്ക്കാരിന്റെ നിയന്ത്രണങ്ങള് വന്നതോടെ നിര്മ്മാണ സാമഗ്രികളായ ബ്ലൂ മെറ്റല്സ്, ഇഷ്ടികച്ചൂള വ്യവസായങ്ങളിലേക്ക് മാറി. നാമക്കലില് കോഴി വളര്ത്തല് മേഖലയിലും ഇവര്ക്ക് ആധിപത്യമുണ്ടെന്ന് വിടുതലൈ ചിരുതൈഗള് കക്ഷി (വി.സി.കെ) ഭാരവാഹിയായ ശിവകുമാര് പറയുന്നു.
ഈ സമുദായത്തിന്റെ സ്വാധീനം കാരണം, സര്ക്കാരുണ്ടാക്കുമ്പോള് ഡി.എം.കെയും എ.ഐ.എ.ഡി.എം.കെയും സാധാരണയായി 6-7 മന്ത്രിസ്ഥാനങ്ങള് ഈ സമുദായത്തിന് നല്കാറുണ്ടെന്ന് ശിവകുമാര് പറഞ്ഞു. 'ഏത് പാര്ട്ടി അധികാരത്തിലിരുന്നാലും ബിസിനസ് ഇടപാടുകള് പാര്ട്ടി വ്യത്യാസമില്ലാതെ നടക്കും,' അദ്ദേഹം കൂട്ടിച്ചേര്ത്തു. ഗൗണ്ടര് സമുദായത്തില് ' കൂട്ടം' എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന നിരവധി ഉപവിഭാഗങ്ങളുണ്ട്. വീരമണിയുടെ കുടുംബം 'കാട്ടു കൂട്ടം' വിഭാഗത്തില്പ്പെട്ടതാണ്. പൊളിറ്റിക്സിലും ബിസിനസ്സിലും പരസ്പരം സഹായിക്കുന്ന ശക്തമായ കൂട്ടായ്മ ഇതിനുള്ളിലുണ്ട്.
വീരമണിക്ക് മൂന്ന് സഹോദരന്മാരും ശാരദാമണി എന്ന ഒരു സഹോദരിയുമുണ്ട്. മുന് ഡി.എം.കെ എം.പി പരേതനായ എസ്. കണ്ടപ്പനാണ് ശാരദാമണിയെ വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചത്.
ഗ്രാനൈറ്റ് കയറ്റുമതി ബിസിനസിലേക്ക് കടക്കുന്നതിന് മുമ്പ് വീരമണി അഭിഭാഷകനായി പരിശീലനം നേടുകയും മദ്രാസ് ഹൈക്കോടതിയില് പ്രാക്ടീസ് ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. 2021-ലെ ലോക തമിഴ് സാമ്പത്തിക സമ്മേളനത്തില് നടത്തിയ പ്രസംഗത്തില്, 11 വര്ഷത്തെ അഭിഭാഷക ജീവിതത്തില് താന് 'ഡി.എം.കെയുടെ അഭിഭാഷകനായിരുന്നുവെന്നും നൂറുകണക്കിന് കേസുകള് സൗജന്യമായി വാദിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടെന്നും' അദ്ദേഹം പറയുന്നുണ്ട്.
വീരമണിയുടെ കുടുംബം സാമ്പത്തികമായി വലിയ മെച്ചത്തിലായിരുന്നില്ലെന്നും ഗ്രാമത്തില് 1-2 ഏക്കര് ഭൂമി മാത്രമാണ് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നതെന്നും കോയമ്പത്തൂരില് നിന്നുള്ള ഒരു മുന് ഡി.എം.കെ ഭാരവാഹി പറഞ്ഞു. സഹോദരിയുടെ വിവാഹശേഷമാണ് അദ്ദേഹം ചെന്നൈയിലേക്ക് മാറുന്നത്. ഒരു കക്ഷി വഴിയാണ് അദ്ദേഹം ഗ്രാനൈറ്റ് മേഖല പരിചയപ്പെടുന്നത്. 'റെഡ് ഗ്രാനൈറ്റ് വിപണനം ചെയ്തും കയറ്റുമതി ചെയ്തുമാണ് അദ്ദേഹം പേരെടുത്തത്. ഇത് 'ജെം റെഡ് ഗ്രാനൈറ്റ്' എന്നാണ് അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്. കര്ണാടകയിലെ ഇല്കാലില് അവര്ക്ക് 1,000 ഏക്കറോളം ഭൂമിയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. വിദേശത്ത് വലിയ ജനപ്രീതി നേടിയ ഈ കല്ലിന്റെ കാര്യത്തില് അവര്ക്ക് ഒരു തരം കുത്തക തന്നെയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു,' അദ്ദേഹം കൂട്ടിച്ചേര്ത്തു.
1972-ല് വീരമണി 'ജെം ഗ്രാനൈറ്റ്സ്' സ്ഥാപിച്ചതായി പറയുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും കമ്പനി രജിസ്റ്റര് ചെയ്തത് 1982 നവംബറിലാണ്. എല്ലാവരും കറുപ്പും ചാരനിറവുമുള്ള കല്ലുകള് കയറ്റി അയച്ചിരുന്നപ്പോള്, താന് സ്വീഡനില് നിന്ന് പരിശീലനം നേടി ഇന്ത്യയില് നിന്നുള്ള വര്ണ്ണാഭമായ ഗ്രാനൈറ്റുകള്ക്ക് വിപണി കണ്ടെത്തിയതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് വീരമണി പലപ്പോഴും സംസാരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
റവന്യൂ ഭൂമികളില് ഖനനത്തിനുള്ള പാട്ടത്തിന് അപേക്ഷിച്ച് വീരമണി തന്റെ ബിസിനസ് സാമ്രാജ്യം കെട്ടിപ്പടുക്കുകയായിരുന്നുവെന്ന് ഈ മേഖലയിലെ മറ്റൊരു വ്യവസായി പറയുന്നു. 80-കളിലും 90-കളിലും പെര്മിറ്റുകള് കൈയ്യെഴുത്തായി നല്കിയിരുന്ന കാലത്ത് '1+3' രീതിയാണ് ഇവര് ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നതെന്ന് മുന് ഡി.എം.കെ ഭാരവാഹി ആരോപിച്ചു അതായത് ഒരു പെര്മിറ്റ് ഉപയോഗിച്ച് മൂന്ന് ലോഡ് ഗ്രാനൈറ്റ് കടത്തുക. മറ്റ് പലരും വീരമണിയുടെ വിജയം കണ്ടാണ് ഈ മേഖലയിലേക്ക് വന്നത്.

എന്നാല്, മുന്പ് ഗ്രാനൈറ്റ് വിപണി ഭരിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കിലും, സമീപകാലത്ത് ജെം ഗ്രാനൈറ്റ്സിന്റെ ലാഭം കുത്തനെ ഇടിഞ്ഞു. 2024-25 സാമ്പത്തിക വര്ഷത്തില് 14 കോടി രൂപ വരുമാനത്തില് 41.68 ലക്ഷം രൂപ മാത്രമാണ് കമ്പനിയുടെ ലാഭം. വീരമണിക്ക് മറ്റ് 11 സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളില് പങ്കാളിത്തമുണ്ട്. സഹോദരങ്ങള് തമ്മിലുള്ള അഭിപ്രായവ്യത്യാസങ്ങളും ബിസിനസിന്റെ തകര്ച്ചയ്ക്ക് കാരണമായതായി പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മക്കള്ക്ക് ഈ ബിസിനസ്സില് താല്പര്യമുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല.
രാഷ്ട്രീയ വൃത്തങ്ങളില് നിന്ന് അകറ്റപ്പെടുന്നു
തന്റെ വ്യവസായ സാമ്രാജ്യം വളര്ത്തിയെടുത്തപ്പോള് തന്നെ ശക്തമായ രാഷ്ട്രീയ ബന്ധങ്ങളും വീരമണി ഉണ്ടാക്കിയെടുത്തു. 70-കളില് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ക്വാറി ബിസിനസ്സ് സര്ക്കാര് തടഞ്ഞപ്പോള്, അന്നത്തെ യുവ അഭിഭാഷകനായിരുന്ന പി. ചിദംബരത്തിന്റെ സഹായത്തോടെയാണ് അത് പുനഃസ്ഥാപിച്ചതെന്ന് വീരമണി തന്നെ വെളിപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. പെരിയാറിന്റെ അനുയായിയായിരുന്ന തന്റെ പിതാവിനെക്കുറിച്ചും ദ്രാവിഡ കഴകം അധ്യക്ഷന് കെ. വീരമണിയുമായുള്ള സൗഹൃദത്തെക്കുറിച്ചും അദ്ദേഹം എഴുതിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.

കേസിന്റെ തുടക്കത്തില് പോലീസിന്റെ ഭാഗത്തുനിന്നുണ്ടായ വീഴ്ചകള് വലിയ വിമര്ശനത്തിന് വഴിവച്ചു. 2025 ഒക്ടോബറില് ഒരു ശിശുവകാശ പ്രവര്ത്തക നല്കിയ പരാതിയും പീഡന ദൃശ്യങ്ങളടങ്ങിയ പെന്ഡ്രൈവും ലഭിച്ചിട്ടും, 2026 ഫെബ്രുവരിയില് ചെന്നൈ പോലീസ് കേസ് അവസാനിപ്പിക്കാന് റിപ്പോര്ട്ട് നല്കിയിരുന്നു. എന്നാല് പോക്സോ കോടതി ജഡ്ജി ഈ റിപ്പോര്ട്ട് തള്ളിയതോടെയാണ് അന്വേഷണം പുനരാരംഭിക്കുന്നതും ഓഗസ്റ്റില് വീരമണി ഉള്പ്പെടെയുള്ളവരുടെ അറസ്റ്റിലേക്ക് കാര്യങ്ങളെത്തുന്നതും.

The Tamil Nadu government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising four women police officers to investigate the POCSO cases registered against 84-year-old granite tycoon R. Veeramani. According to an order issued by Director General of Police Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, the SIT was formed for an 'efficient investigation' into the case involving the founder of Gem Granites and its related matters.
Meanwhile, a Chennai Special POCSO Court extended Veeramani's judicial custody until October 9 on Friday. His previous remand period, which began on August 29, was set to expire on Friday.
The SIT members include CCB Chennai Additional Police Commissioner P.C. Thenmozhi, Law and Order West Joint Commissioner of Police Disha Mittal, Superintendent of Police J. Muttashi, and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Against Women and Children Wing) V.V. Geethanjali. The team will function under the direct supervision of Chennai Police Commissioner A. Amalraj.
Due to security reasons, Veeramani was produced before Special Judge S. Padma via videoconferencing. After hearing the arguments, the judge extended his judicial custody until October 9.
Veeramani is accused of sexually abusing minor girls. He and three others have been arrested in connection with the case. Following allegations that the police failed to act despite a complaint lodged in November 2024, the government placed two senior IPS officers, including former Chennai Police Commissioner A. Arun, on compulsory wait after transferring them from their posts.
The case triggered widespread outrage across Tamil Nadu, with political parties and civil society groups demanding severe punishment for those accused.
From Granite Tycoon to POCSO Accused
Veeramani was previously known as a highly influential businessman who achieved massive success in granite mining and exports. However, his dark side came to light following his arrest in connection with the sexual abuse of a minor girl.
"R. Veeramani is India's most senior granite exporter. He has offices in 86 countries..." This was how V.R.S. Sampath, president of the World Tamil Economic Conference, introduced Veeramani at the event held in Durban in 2017. Those words reflected the image he had built in the public eye—a pioneer in the country's granite export sector, a well-connected entrepreneur, head of various trade associations, and a member of several government committees.
However, everything changed with his arrest in late August. The octogenarian became an accused in a case involving the sexual abuse of a minor girl. Following his arrest, the police expanded their probe as more survivors from marginalized communities came forward with similar allegations.
Former business associates of Veeramani expressed shock over the allegations. "This case has shocked everyone," said Ishwinder Singh, the current president of the Federation of Indian Granite and Stone Industry, which Veeramani founded in 1983. Several other industry figures declined to comment.
Public speeches, company documents, and industry discussions portray a picture of a successful businessman who once dominated the industry he helped build and maintained powerful political ties. Today, however, he is lodged in Chennai's Puzhal Central Jail alongside accomplices who aided in the crimes.
From Lawyer to Industrialist
Rangaswamy Veeramani grew up in Tiruchengode (in present-day Namakkal district) in western Tamil Nadu. According to details shared by Veeramani during an industry association meeting in Chennai in 2012 and in the publication The Modern Rationalist, his father, S.P. Rangaswamy, ran a groundnut oil business and contested the assembly elections from Tiruchengode as a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) candidate.
His family belongs to the Kongu Vellala Gounder community, an influential group in western Tamil Nadu. Previously active in mineral mining, the community shifted to construction materials like blue metals and brick kiln industries following government regulations. According to Shivakumar, an office-bearer of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), they also hold dominance in the poultry farming sector in Namakkal.
Due to the community's influence, both DMK and AIADMK typically allocate 6 to 7 cabinet positions to members of this community whenever they form governments, Shivakumar noted. "Regardless of which party is in power, business transactions continue seamlessly across party lines," he added. The Gounder community has several sub-clans known as 'Kootam.' Veeramani’s family belongs to the 'Kattu Kootam' sub-clan, an internal network known for mutual support in both politics and business.
Veeramani has three brothers and a sister, Sharadamani. Sharadamani was married to the late DMK MP, S. Kandappan.
Before entering the granite export business, Veeramani trained as a lawyer and practiced at the Madras High Court. In a speech delivered at the 2021 World Tamil Economic Conference, he mentioned that during his 11-year legal career, he served as a 'lawyer for the DMK' and argued hundreds of cases pro bono.
A former DMK office-bearer from Coimbatore mentioned that Veeramani’s family was not initially wealthy, owning only about 1 to 2 acres of land in their village. He moved to Chennai after his sister's marriage. It was through a client that he was introduced to the granite sector. "He made a name for himself by marketing and exporting red granite, which came to be known as 'Gem Red Granite.' They owned around 1,000 acres in Ilkal, Karnataka. They held a virtual monopoly on this stone, which gained immense popularity abroad," he added.
Although Veeramani claimed to have established 'Gem Granites' in 1972, the company was officially registered in November 1982. At a time when most exporters focused on black and grey stones, Veeramani often spoke about how he underwent training in Sweden to build a market for colorful Indian granites.
Another businessman from the sector noted that Veeramani built his business empire by applying for mining leases on revenue lands. A former DMK official alleged that during the 1980s and 1990s, when permits were issued manually, they used the '1+3' method—transporting three loads of granite using a single permit. Seeing Veeramani's success, many others entered the sector.
Veeramani later expanded his business into hospitality and magnet manufacturing. He also served as the head of the Indo-Russian Chamber of Commerce and the Indo-Japan Chamber of Commerce. He claimed credit for introducing the concept of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) to the government and served for a long period as the chairman of 'CAPEXIL,' an organization under the Union Ministry of Commerce.
However, despite its past dominance, Gem Granites experienced a sharp decline in profits in recent years. In the 2024–25 financial year, the company reported a revenue of ₹14 crore but a profit of only ₹41.68 lakh. Veeramani holds stakes in 11 other entities. Differences among family members and brothers are also cited as reasons for the business's decline, as his children reportedly lacked interest in continuing the trade.
Distanced from Political Circles
While expanding his business empire, Veeramani cultivated strong political connections. Veeramani himself revealed that when the government halted his quarry operations in the 1970s, it was restored with the help of P. Chidambaram, who was then a young lawyer. He also wrote about his father being a follower of Periyar and shared insights into his friendship with Dravidar Kazhagam president K. Veeramani.
The case has now snowballed into a major political controversy, with allegations that the previous DMK government attempted to shield the accused. However, former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin refuted these allegations, clarifying that neither the offender nor those who aided him would be spared. Photos of Veeramani posing alongside various political leaders have been circulating widely on social media.
Initial police lapses drew severe public criticism. Despite receiving a complaint from a child rights activist along with a pen drive containing abuse footage in October 2025, Chennai Police filed a report to close the case in February 2026. However, after the POCSO court judge rejected the closure report, the investigation was reopened, leading to the arrest of Veeramani and others in August.
Following reports that senior police officers had information regarding the case a year before the complaint was officially acted upon, action was taken against two officers. Currently, with the Vijay-led government assigning a special investigation team of women officers to probe the case, the public remains eager to see where the investigation leads and whether all individuals involved in the crime will be brought to justice.
