തിരുവനന്തപുരം : കേരള സംഗീത നാടക അക്കാദമി മുന്‍ ചെയര്‍മാനും സൂര്യ സ്റ്റേജ് ആന്‍ഡ് ഫിലിം സൊസൈറ്റിയുടെ സ്ഥാപക ഡയറക്ടറുമായ സൂര്യ കൃഷ്ണമൂര്‍ത്തി (78) അന്തരിച്ചു. കരള്‍ സംബന്ധമായ അസുഖങ്ങളെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തെ കിംസ് ആശുപത്രിയില്‍ ചികിത്സയിലായിരുന്നു.

ഇന്ത്യന്‍ കലകളെയും സംസ്‌കാരത്തെയും പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനായി ജീവിതം ഉഴിഞ്ഞുവെക്കുന്നതിന് മുന്‍പ്, 1970-കളുടെ തുടക്കത്തില്‍ ഡോ. എ.പി.ജെ. അബ്ദുള്‍ കലാമിനൊപ്പം ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സ്‌പേസ് റിസര്‍ച്ച് ഓര്‍ഗനൈസേഷനില്‍ എഞ്ചിനീയറായി അദ്ദേഹം സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

1977-ല്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തില്‍ ആരംഭിച്ച സൂര്യ സൊസൈറ്റി, ഇന്ത്യയിലെ തന്നെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ സാംസ്‌കാരിക പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങളില്‍ ഒന്നായി വളര്‍ന്നു. ഇന്ത്യയിലെ തന്നെ ഏറ്റവും ദൈര്‍ഘ്യമേറിയ സാംസ്‌കാരിക ഉത്സവമെന്ന നിലയില്‍ സൂര്യ ഫെസ്റ്റിവല്‍ ലിംകാ ബുക്ക് ഒഫ് റെക്കോര്‍ഡ്‌സില്‍ ഇടംനേടി. സംഗീതം, നൃത്തം, നാടകം, സിനിമ എന്നിവയിലെ പ്രഗത്ഭരുടെ പ്രകടനങ്ങള്‍ കേരളത്തിലെ ആസ്വാദകരിലേക്ക് എത്തിക്കാന്‍ ഇതിലൂടെ സാധിച്ചു.

1978-ല്‍ നിര്‍മ്മിച്ച 'വേലുത്തമ്പി ദളവ' എന്ന കേരളത്തിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ ലൈറ്റ് ആന്‍ഡ് സൗണ്ട് ഷോ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സൃഷ്ടിയായിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രശസ്തമായ 'മേല്‍വിലാസം' എന്ന നാടകം 400-ലധികം വേദികളില്‍ അവതരിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുകയും പിന്നീട് അതേ പേരില്‍ സിനിമയായി.

കേരള സംഗീത നാടക അക്കാദമി മുന്‍ ചെയര്‍മാനായ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് സംഗീത നാടക അക്കാദമി അവാര്‍ഡ്, കേരള സംഗീത നാടക അക്കാദമി ഫെലോഷിപ്പ് തുടങ്ങി രംഗകലകള്‍ക്കും സാംസ്‌കാരിക പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ക്കുമുള്ള നിരവധി ദേശീയ-അന്തര്‍ദേശീയ പുരസ്‌കാരങ്ങള്‍ ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

 Soorya Krishnamoorthy (78), founder-director of the Soorya Stage and Film Society and former Chairman of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, has passed away. He was undergoing treatment for liver-related ailments at KIMS Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.

Before dedicating his life to promoting Indian arts and culture, he served as an engineer at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) alongside Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in the early 1970s.

Founded under his leadership in 1977, the Soorya Society grew into one of the largest cultural movements in India. The Soorya Festival entered the Limca Book of Records as India's longest cultural festival, bringing performances by stalwarts in music, dance, theater, and cinema to audiences in Kerala.

He created Kerala's first light and sound show, Veluthampi Dalawa, produced in 1978. His famous play Melvilasam was staged over 400 times and was later adapted into a feature film of the same name.

As former Chairman of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, he received numerous national and international honors for his contributions to the performing arts and cultural field, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Fellowship.
