40 km chase with policeman on car roof: Tamil Nadu Police heroically catch tobacco smugglers
കോയമ്പത്തൂര് : തമിഴ്നാട്ടില് നിരോധിത പുകയില ഉല്പ്പന്നങ്ങള് കടത്താന് ശ്രമിച്ച സംഘത്തെ തടയാന് ശ്രമിക്കുന്നതിനിടെ പൊലീസുകാരന് കാറിന്റെ മേല്ക്കൂരയില് 40 കിലോമീറ്ററോളം പിടിച്ചുകിടന്നു.
ഏകദേശം 300 കിലോഗ്രാം ഗുഡ്കയും മറ്റ് നിരോധിത പുകയില ഉല്പ്പന്നങ്ങളുമാണ് വാഹനത്തില് കടത്തിയിരുന്നതെന്ന് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥര് വ്യക്തമാക്കി. ഇതിന്റെ വീഡിയോ ദൃശ്യങ്ങളും പുറത്തുവന്നിട്ടുണ്ട്.

വാഹനത്തിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന മൂന്ന് പേരില് ഒരാളെ പൊലീസ് ഉടന് തന്നെ കസ്റ്റഡിയിലെടുത്തു. ബാക്കി രണ്ടുപേര് ഓടി രക്ഷപ്പെട്ടെങ്കിലും പിന്നീട് നടത്തിയ തിരച്ചിലില് പൊലീസ് ഇവരെയും പിടികൂടി. കാറും പൊലീസ് കസ്റ്റഡിയിലെടുത്തു. ബാബു ധാരാ (27), രാജേഷ് (23), സുരേഷ് (20) എന്നിവരാണ് അറസ്റ്റിലായ പ്രതികള്.
ബെംഗളൂരുവില് നിന്ന് കോയമ്പത്തൂരിലേക്ക് വിതരണത്തിനായി പുകയില ഉല്പ്പന്നങ്ങള് എത്തിക്കുകയായിരുന്നുവെന്ന് ചോദ്യം ചെയ്യലില് ഇവര് സമ്മതിച്ചതായി പൊലീസ് പറഞ്ഞു. സംഭവത്തില് കൂടുതല് അന്വേഷണം നടന്നു വരികയാണ്.
വാഹനത്തെ പിന്തുടരുന്നതിനും വേല്മുരുകനെ രക്ഷപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിനും പൊലീസിനെ സഹായിച്ച ആംബുലന്സ് ജീവനക്കാരെയും സന്നദ്ധപ്രവര്ത്തകരെയും പൊലീസ് പ്രശംസിച്ചു.

While trying to stop a gang attempting to smuggle banned tobacco products in Tamil Nadu, a policeman clung to the roof of a car for nearly 40 kilometers.
Officials stated that the vehicle was transporting around 300 kilograms of gutkha and other banned tobacco products. Video footage of the incident has also surfaced.
Three people have been arrested in connection with the incident. Head Constable Velmurugan, who showed immense courage by holding onto the car roof, is receiving widespread praise from the public.
During a routine vehicle check conducted by the police near Coimbatore, officers noticed numerous sacks stored in the back of the car. When a Sub-Inspector approached to inspect the vehicle, the three occupants pushed the police away, locked the doors, and attempted to speed off.
Head Constable Velmurugan immediately leaped onto the car's roof. The car then sped away with Velmurugan clinging to it.
Navigating through several busy roads in the suburbs of Coimbatore, the car eventually reached a toll plaza, where it sped through the barrier-less lane on the far left.
Meanwhile, commuters who saw Head Constable Velmurugan precariously clinging to the top of the speeding car captured the incident on their mobile phones. Upon receiving information about the chase, police teams and ambulance staff from the neighboring Tiruppur district stepped in to intercept the vehicle.
The 40-kilometer chase finally ended in Tiruppur, where police vehicles and ambulances surrounded the car and forced it to a stop.
Police immediately detained one of the three occupants, while the other two fled the scene but were apprehended shortly after during a search operation. The vehicle was also seized. The arrested individuals have been identified as Babu Dhara (27), Rajesh (23), and Suresh (20).
During interrogation, the suspects admitted to transporting tobacco products from Bengaluru to Coimbatore for distribution, police said. Further investigation is underway.
The police praised the ambulance crew and volunteers who assisted in pursuing the vehicle and rescuing Velmurugan.
