News in English:
New Delhi: Former Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan addressed speculations regarding whether India targeted Kirana Hills, near Sargodha in Pakistan, during Operation Sindoor. He clarified that a loitering munition (attack drone) sent to hunt radars likely crashed into one of these hills after failing to find a target.
Kirana Hills, located about 10 kilometers north of Sargodha, has long been associated with Pakistan’s nuclear infrastructure. Questions arose about whether India had targeted the area after Pakistani media broadcasted footage of smoke rising from these hills during the military conflict.
Chauhan stated that prior to the airstrikes, India had deployed several loitering munitions toward the Sargodha region to track Pakistani radars.
"Before those strikes, we sent a lot of loitering missions toward Sargodha and Kirana Hills. These missions were attempting to detect radars in and around Sargodha," Chauhan said while speaking at an event organized by the Vivekananda International Foundation.
He explained that such weapons can stay airborne for up to two hours while searching for targets. If no target is found, they eventually crash to the ground.
"It must have gone and crashed into one of those hills. That might be the reason why Pakistani media showed footage of smoke rising from Kirana Hills," he added.
Chauhan’s statements clarify that India did not intentionally attack Kirana Hills or the nuclear facilities located there.
The deployment of loitering munitions around Sargodha was part of India’s broader strategy during Operation Sindoor to exploit low-altitude airspace.
Chauhan described this as a "third option," distinct from the army's ground response after the Uri terror attack and the large-scale air force package deployed after Pulwama.
"During Operation Sindoor, we decided to choose a third path—exploiting low-altitude airspace. This helped keep the scale of conflict controlled while ensuring success and retaining the element of surprise," he said.
Drones, loitering munitions, attack helicopters, and other low-flying platforms can utilize this low-altitude airspace.
Chauhan also revealed that India authorized continued strikes on Pakistani military targets, including Sargodha, even after Islamabad reached out for talks.
He mentioned that when Pakistan expressed a desire to talk around 10:00 AM, the Air Chief asked him whether to proceed with the attack on Sargodha. "Go ahead," I replied. Chauhan added that he then asked the Air Chief to identify two more targets.
"I asked for two more targets to be identified, one of which was Skardu. We approved it, but due to bad weather later, it had to be shifted to Bholari," he said.
Chauhan clarified that one of the core principles of the strategic framework they established was not allowing Pakistan to have the final strike.
He noted that Pakistan was unaware of whether their own strikes had hit their targets and tried acquiring commercial satellite imagery until May 12 to find evidence of damage.
He added that they found no evidence because their strikes failed to reach their intended targets.
Chauhan attributed India's success in Operation Sindoor to superior situational awareness, battlefield transparency, and excellent coordination among the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
He added that clear political guidance gave the military complete freedom to plan operations.
Chauhan stated that during the operation, none of the three services presented their individual capability limitations to the political leadership. All three branches operated under a single unified plan.
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025, in response to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed 26 lives.
In the first phase, forces struck nine locations linked to terror organizations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. When Pakistan retaliated, the Indian Air Force delivered a decisive counterstrike targeting their military infrastructure and radar stations.
