Sangeetha Withdraws Divorce Petition, Ending Legal Proceedings Against Vijay
ചെന്നൈ: തമിഴ്നാട് മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിയും തമിഴക വെട്രി കഴകം (ടിവികെ) അധ്യക്ഷനുമായ സി. ജോസഫ് വിജയ്ക്കെതിരെ നല്കിയ വിവാഹമോചന ഹര്ജി ഭാര്യ സംഗീത സ്വര്ണലിംഗം പിന്വലിച്ചു. ചെങ്കല്പെട്ട് ഫാമിലി കോടതിയില് വിഡിയോ കോണ്ഫറന്സിങ് വഴി ഹാജരായ സംഗീത, കേസുമായി മുന്നോട്ട് പോകാന് താല്പര്യമില്ലെന്ന് ജഡ്ജി സുജാതയെ അറിയിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.
15 മിനിറ്റോളം നീണ്ട വിചാരണയ്ക്ക ശേഷം കോടതി ഹര്ജി പിന്വലിക്കാന് അനുമതി നല്കുകയും കേസ് ഔദ്യോഗികമായി അവസാനിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഈ വര്ഷം ഫെബ്രുവരി 26-നാണ് സ്പെഷ്യല് മാര്യേജ് ആക്ട് (1954) പ്രകാരം സംഗീത വിവാഹമോചന ഹര്ജി ഫയല് ചെയ്തത്. ദാമ്പത്യ വഞ്ചന, മാനസിക പീഡനം, സംരക്ഷണമില്ലായ്മ എന്നീ ആരോപണങ്ങളാണ് ഹര്ജിയില് ഉന്നയിച്ചിരുന്നത്. വിജയ്ക്ക് ഒരു നടിയുമായുള്ള ബന്ധം തനിക്ക് കടുത്ത മാനസിക വിഷമമുണ്ടാക്കിയെന്നും ദാമ്പത്യബന്ധം തകര്ച്ചയിലെത്തിയെന്നും ഹര്ജിയില് വ്യക്തമാക്കിയിരുന്നു.
സ്ഥിരമായ ജീവനാംശം, നീലാങ്കരയിലെ കുടുംബവീട്ടില് തുടര്ന്ന് താമസിക്കാനുള്ള അനുമതി എന്നിവയാണ് സംഗീത ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്. ഹര്ജി പിന്വലിക്കാന് അനുമതി നല്കിയ കോടതി, ഭാവിയില് ആവശ്യമെങ്കില് പുതിയ ഹര്ജി നല്കാനുള്ള സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം സംഗീതയ്ക്ക് അനുവദിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. വിജയുടെ അഭിഭാഷകരും ഹര്ജി പിന്വലിക്കുന്നതില് എതിര്പ്പില്ലെന്ന് കോടതിയെ അറിയിച്ചു.
യുകെയില് വളര്ന്ന ശ്രീലങ്കന് തമിഴ് വംശജയായ സംഗീത, വിജയിയുടെ 'പൂവേ ഉനക്കാഗ' (1996) എന്ന സിനിമയുടെ വിജയത്തിന് ശേഷം അദ്ദേഹത്തെ അഭിനന്ദിക്കാന് ചെന്നൈയില് എത്തിയതാണ് പരിചയത്തിലായത്. തുടര്ന്ന് 1998-ല് യുകെയില് വിവാഹം രജിസ്റ്റര് ചെയ്യുകയും 1999 ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 25-ന് ചെന്നൈയില് പരമ്പരാഗത ചടങ്ങുകളോടെ വിവാഹിതരാകുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇരുവര്ക്കും ജേസണ് സഞ്ജയ് എന്ന മകനും ദിവ്യ സാഷ എന്ന മകളുമുണ്ട്.
2026-ലെ തമിഴ്നാട് നിയമസഭാ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ് പ്രചാരണ വേളയില് ഈ കേസ് വലിയ രാഷ്ട്രീയ ചര്ച്ചയായിരുന്നു. വിജയ് ഭാര്യയ്ക്ക് 12.60 കോടി രൂപ വായ്പ നല്കിയെന്ന സത്യവാങ്മൂലത്തെ ചോദ്യം ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ട് മദ്രാസ് ഹൈക്കോടതിയില് ഹര്ജി വന്നിരുന്നെങ്കിലും കോടതി അത് തള്ളിയിരുന്നു. തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പില് 108 സീറ്റുകള് നേടി ടിവികെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ഒറ്റക്കക്ഷിയാവുകയും വിജയ് തമിഴ്നാടിന്റെ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിയായി ചുമതലയേല്ക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഹര്ജി പൂര്ണ്ണമായി പിന്വലിച്ചതോടെ മാസങ്ങളായി നീണ്ടുനിന്ന നിയമതര്ക്കങ്ങള്ക്കാണ് ഇപ്പോള് അവസാനമായിരിക്കുന്നത്.

Sangeetha Sornalingam has withdrawn the divorce petition filed against her husband, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) President C. Joseph Vijay. Appearing before the Chengalpattu Family Court via video conferencing, Sangeetha informed Judge Sujatha that she was no longer interested in pursuing the case.
Following a 15-minute hearing, the court permitted the withdrawal and officially closed the matter. Sangeetha had filed for divorce under the Special Marriage Act (1954) on February 26 this year, citing marital infidelity, mental cruelty, and desertion. The petition stated that Vijay's relationship with an actress had caused her severe mental distress, leading to the breakdown of their marriage.
Sangeetha had initially sought permanent alimony and permission to continue residing in their family home in Neelankarai. While granting permission to withdraw the current plea, the court granted her liberty to file a fresh petition in the future if required. Counsel for Vijay raised no objections to the petition's withdrawal.
Sangeetha, a Sri Lankan Tamil raised in the UK, first met Vijay when she traveled to Chennai to congratulate him after the success of his 1996 film Poove Unakkaga. They registered their marriage in the UK in 1998 and solemnized it through a traditional ceremony in Chennai on August 25, 1999. The couple has a son, Jason Sanjay, and a daughter, Divya Shasha.
The legal dispute became a major political talking point during the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. A petition was also filed in the Madras High Court challenging Vijay's election affidavit, which disclosed a ₹12.60 crore loan given to his wife, though the court ultimately dismissed it. TVK subsequently emerged as the single largest party by winning 108 seats, with Vijay taking charge as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
The complete withdrawal of the petition officially brings an end to months of legal turmoil.
