Onam Gift: No Longer 'Kerala', It is 'Keralam'—Official Notification Issued

ന്യൂഡല്‍ഹി: സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ ഔദ്യോഗിക പേര് 'കേരളം' എന്നാക്കുന്ന നിയമം പ്രാബല്യത്തില്‍ വരുത്തി കേന്ദ്ര സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ഔദ്യോഗിക വിജ്ഞാപനം പുറപ്പെടുവിച്ചു. പാര്‍ലമെന്റിന്റെ വര്‍ഷകാല സമ്മേളനത്തില്‍ പാസാക്കിയ നിയമത്തിന് ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 14-ന് രാഷ്ട്രപതി അംഗീകാരം നല്‍കിയിരുന്നു.

കേന്ദ്ര-സംസ്ഥാന സര്‍ക്കാരുകളുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട എല്ലാ ഔദ്യോഗിക രേഖകളിലും കോടതി നടപടികളിലും ഇനി പേര് 'കേരളം' എന്നായിരിക്കും ഉപയോഗിക്കുക. ഇതിനായുള്ള നടപടികള്‍ പൂര്‍ത്തിയാകും.

2024 ജൂണില്‍ കേരള നിയമസഭ ഏകകണ്ഠമായി പാസാക്കിയ പ്രമേയത്തിന്റെ തുടര്‍ച്ചയായാണ് കേന്ദ്ര സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ രാഷ്ട്രപതിയുടെ ശുപാര്‍ശയോടെ പാര്‍ലമെന്റില്‍ ബില്‍ അവതരിപ്പിച്ച് നിയമമാക്കിയത്.

2024 ജൂണില്‍ കേരള നിയമസഭ സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ പേര് ഭരണഘടനയില്‍ 'കേരളം' എന്ന് മാറ്റണമെന്ന് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ട് ഐക്യകണ്‌ഠേന പ്രമേയം പാസാക്കി കേന്ദ്രത്തിന് അയക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. മാതൃഭാഷയായ മലയാളത്തില്‍ 'കേരളം' എന്നാണ് പറയുന്നതെങ്കിലും, 1956-ല്‍ സംസ്ഥാന രൂപീകരണ സമയത്ത് ഭരണഘടനയുടെ ഒന്നാം പട്ടികയില്‍ 'കേരള' എന്നാണ് രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിരുന്നത്. ഇത് തിരുത്താനാണ് നിയമസഭ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടത്.  

ഇന്ത്യന്‍ ഭരണഘടനയുടെ ഒന്നാം പട്ടികയില്‍ ഇനി 'കേരള' എന്നതിന് പകരം 'കേരളം' എന്ന് ഔദ്യോഗികമായി മാറും. ഭരണഘടനയുടെ എട്ടാം പട്ടികയിലുള്ള എല്ലാ ഔദ്യോഗിക ഭാഷകളിലും ഇനി സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ പേര് 'കേരളം' എന്ന് തന്നെയായിരിക്കും ഉപയോഗിക്കുക.

The Central Government has issued an official notification bringing into effect the law changing the state's official name to 'Keralam'. The bill, passed during Parliament's Monsoon Session, received the President's assent on August 14.

going forward, the name 'Keralam' will be used in all official documents and court proceedings related to both the Central and State governments. Necessary procedures for this transition will be completed shortly.

The law was enacted after the Central Government introduced the bill in Parliament with the President's recommendation, following a resolution unanimously passed by the Kerala Legislative Assembly in June 2024.

In June 2024, the Kerala Legislative Assembly unanimously passed and sent a resolution requesting the Centre to change the state's name to 'Keralam' in the Constitution. Although the state is referred to as 'Keralam' in its mother tongue, Malayalam, it was recorded as 'Kerala' in the First Schedule of the Constitution during the reorganization of states in 1956. The Assembly requested this correction.

In the First Schedule of the Indian Constitution, the official name will now be changed from 'Kerala' to 'Keralam'. Furthermore, the state's name will now be rendered as 'Keralam' across all official languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
