News in English:
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim clarified in an interview with NDTV that he does not agree with the anti-women stance of Islamic scholar Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar. Anwar Ibrahim made these comments right before his visit to meet Kanthapuram in Kozhikode. He added that he would directly inform Kanthapuram that Malaysia guarantees equal rights for women.
Anwar Ibrahim was speaking on the sidelines of the BRICS summit held in New Delhi. He was responding to a question regarding Kanthapuram's recent remarks that "women should remain confined within their homes."
"He is a traditional religious scholar who has made significant contributions to understanding the Holy Quran, the Sunnah (Prophetic traditions), and Islamic texts. In many ways, he is a great teacher. However, we certainly do not agree with all of his views," Anwar Ibrahim stated.
He also pointed to institutions run by Kanthapuram, such as nursing colleges, asking whether the female students studying there would not work in hospitals in the future.
"If you look at the full context, I do not have much concern. But if asked publicly, or if I were to tell him directly, I would say, 'No, in Malaysia, we accord equal rights to women.' We have more female students in our universities. My wife is a medical doctor. All my children, including my daughters, have been given full freedom and opportunities to study," he clarified.
He mentioned that he had discussed this topic with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well. "You do not have to agree with all the views of every scholar, just as you do not have to agree with every Prime Minister or President," he remarked.
He emphasized that connections with South India are crucial given Malaysia's diaspora community. He added that he had also wished to visit Tamil Nadu. "However, since Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay was abroad, I decided to focus on Kerala and postpone that visit for later."
Last month, during an Islamic conference held in Kochi, Kanthapuram had stated that women should stay inside their homes and not appear on public platforms. He also commented that women coming onto public platforms leads to great ruin. This statement followed a circular issued by Samastha prohibiting women from sharing stages with men.
Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan had criticized this stance, calling it 19th-century mindset and a misinterpretation of Islam. However, Kanthapuram later clarified that neither he nor his followers believe in locking women up at home.
